Pumpkinfest 2022 Needs You!
Tuesday, November 1, 5.30 - 8.30 pm
Harbord St between Spadina and Borden

We’re thrilled to announce that the Harbord St BIA / HVRA Pumpkinfest is back on in person this year!  On November 1, volunteers will collect jack-o-lanterns from residents’ porches, then light and display them all along Harbord, between Spadina and Borden.  Residents are then invited to view the display - and enjoy live music and apple cider - between 5.30 and 8.30 pm.

We will need volunteers to help with a number of different tasks:
  • Distribute flyers to houses with jack-o-lanterns on the evening of October 31
  • Collect jack-o-lanterns on the afternoon of November 1 with the help of U of T students (vehicle required)
  • Light the jack-o-lanterns on display
  • Serve cider
  • Collect and dispose of candles at the end of the evening
Please contact Lena Mortensen at treasurer@harbordvillage.com if you can help with any of these.

Volunteer with FoSTRA
HVRA has joined the newly formed Federation of South Toronto Residents Associations.  FoSTRA acts as an umbrella organisation that helps to advance issues of common interest across neighbourhoods in a number of downtown wards.  In addition to advocacy work, they need volunteers to sit on their executive.  These positions are open to any member of the participating RAs.  Read the description of the current open position  below:

“Please consider nominating yourself for the vacant FoSTRA board position of Secretary.  To date there have been no applications, so this board position remains open and uncontested for a 2 year term.  The delegate does not have to be on the board of your residents’ association, but must live in your Ward.  The deadline to apply for the Secretary position has been extended to Wednesday October 26, 2022.  It’s easy to apply.  Submit your application here. Please email a short biography or resume summary (maximum 1 page) to nominations@fostrato.ca.  Without you, FoSTRA cannot become the valuable advocate and resource that South Toronto needs.”

AGM Wrap Up
Thanks to everyone who came to the HVRA’s 2022 AGM last Tuesday.  We were happy to welcome Jody Salomon as the new South East Area Rep.  Guest Speaker Adam Vaughan gave a rousing talk about engaging in local interests. You can watch the recording of his part of the meeting here. We were also thrilled to award the Community Builder Award to two previous AGM speakers, Matt Hoffman and Todd Irvine.  You can read about them here.

Our next General Meeting will take place in May 2023.  In the meantime, HVRA members are welcome to attend monthly board meetings as observers.  Please contact Secretary Karen Laurence secretary@harbordvillage.com if you are interested in sitting in.  You can find our tentative meeting schedule for the rest of 2022 here. Minutes of past meetings are posted once they approved at the subsequent meeting here.

NAGs Players’ Comic Potential opens November 10th!
Tranzac Stage, 292 Brunswick Avenue

Evening shows at 7:30 pm: Nov. 10, 11, 12 and 17, 18, 19
Matinee at 1:30 pm: November 12
Tickets: Adults $25; Students/Seniors/NAGs & Tranzac Members $20

Written by Sir Alan Ayckbourn and directed by Brian Russell, NAGs’ first live production in two years takes place in a television studio in the foreseeable future.  Adam, an optimistic and aspiring screenwriter, becomes smitten with Jacie, one of the many low-cost androids (“actoids”) who have replaced human actors on an appalling soap opera. COMIC POTENTIAL explores the notion of whether comedy, laughter, and love are what separates humans from machines.

NAGs Players is Harbord Village’s local non-profit theatre company–many of you will have met them and their “warhorse” puppet at the Fall Fair.
