Members of Retro Report's Council of Educators, an advisory board of teachers from across the nation, collaborate in a strategy session.

Nov. 1, 2022

Dear Friend,

Now that the school year is underway, I am writing to thank you, as a member of the Retro Report community, for giving me and thousands of our fellow educators across the country the tools and resources we need to help students tackle the information crisis we face today. My name is Joe Welch and I teach eighth-grade American history at North Hills Middle School just outside Pittsburgh. The class covers European exploration through Reconstruction.

I was introduced to Retro Report in 2021 through a partnership with the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History, where I led a virtual class on the Cold War. Retro Report videos were the main draw for students, and I witnessed the powerful impact of Retro Report resources firsthand.

Retro Report’s documentary videos and resources are effective at fighting misinformation and can help people discern the truth about a variety of issues. These short videos lay out all the facts and present the opportunity for people to say – You know what, perhaps I was thinking X, but now I think Y. By demonstrating to students that it's O.K. to reframe their thinking based on objective facts and reliable sources, Retro Report helps build empathy and understanding.

Retro Report videos are accessible to everyone and help to level the playing field. So when I saw the opportunity to join Retro Report’s Council of Educators, I thought: Not only is this a tremendous organization, but it's also going to allow me to grow as a professional.

My students and I have benefited from Retro Report’s online library of over 250 short documentary films that use the clear lens of history to bring a greater understanding of our world today. I know that thousands of people across the country share my gratitude for Retro Report’s integrity and commitment to the truth. Teachers crave resources that enrich the curriculum and engage students.

This is why I am asking you to consider making a gift to Retro Report today. Retro Report relies on the generosity of donors who believe in the power and importance of civics education, particularly at this critical time. Please consider making a tax-deductible donation.

Sincerely,

Joe Welch

P.S. Please help us spread the word. Do you have friends and colleagues who would support resources like these? Forward this email to them (and thank you in advance).
