Executive Director's Note

I’m excited to share that Magazines Canada enjoyed a successful “Day on the Hill” this past Monday, October 24, 2022. For the first time we had the provincial associations join Magazines Canada’s delegation to form a collective voice advocating for our mutual members and the magazine and publishing industry. We had the honour to meet with many MPs and Senators at our Day on the Hill Reception.

Magazines Canada collaboration between with AQEM, AMPA, and Magazines BC will continue with initiating joint project funding applications through DCH, along with other future federal government relation activities. Here are more details on our Day on the Hill as well as other goals Magazines Canada are working towards.
  • Reception on the Hill was a huge success with over 50 MPs, Senators, and aides in attendance. I wish to thank the members of our delegation for their support in participation in making these events a success.  Finally, a big thank you to the Magazines Canada staff, Chris Chambers and Rabeet Sarfraz, and Messenger Bag Media's Michael Brown & Chris Radley whose dedication and hard work made these events possible.
  • Great news, the Honourable Pablo Rodriguez, MP, Minister of Canadian Heritage office has announced the relaunching of the Special Measures for Journalism funding with a new investment of over 40 million dollars over three years, starting in 2022-2023. Applications are now being accepted for the Special Measures for Journalism 2022 – Canada Periodical Fund. Please click HERE for more information.
  • Magazines Canada will be submitting a funding application to assist us with upgrading our website to provide our members with a more user friendly and streamline experience, especially with communication.
  • I was honoured to be asked to join the FIPP board of directors and attended the National Association's Committee Meeting on Oct 18th where we discussed many topics including: Current state of markets and its impact on industry, support for Ukrainian media colleagues, implementation of EU Copyright directive, and upcoming FIPP events and 2023 Congress. https://www.fipp.com/
  • I have also been asked to be a member of the the Ontario Creates Magazines Advisory Committee, the committee is scheduled to meet on Oct 31, stay tuned for updates on the committee's work.
  • I had the opportunity to hold a videoconference with the wonderful leadership team at The National Media Awards Foundation (NMAF), including Melony Ward and Barbara Gould who gave me a warm welcome and orientation on their organization's valuable work.
  • I had the pleasure to have calls with many of our members, including The Walrus, Rapid Media, Ornamentum, Krackyl, and Tusaayaksat.
I want to hear from you! Your voice and input are paramount for our industry’s recovery and growth.

- Kim Coles, Executive Director - Magazines Canada
