‘Come Little Children’: Krehbiels Scare Kids, Adults With Halloween Attraction

NEWTON—A group of girls ran out of the Krehbiel family scary attraction on a particular All Hallow’s Eve, and one of them said, “At least there weren’t any clowns.”

Well, that gave the Krehbiels an idea.

“We knew next year, we’ll have clowns,” Lonnie Krehbiel said.

NEWTON—Gayla Hastings turned around in her vehicle to take one last look at her and fiancé Kim Friesen’s rental house in Newton as they left after moving out recently and saw something in a bedroom window–something with eyes.

That something wasn’t human. She believes it was a negative entity that had returned after they left.

Archaeologists To Dig In Halstead This Saturday

HALSTEAD—The extension of Halstead’s Main Street and new housing developments on the south side of town has run into a hiccup.

The city recently learned that before it could proceed with its plans for the Cedar Meadows Second Addition and Powers First Addition, it must allow an archaeological survey of the area.

County Hires Auditor Before Fields Takes Office

The awkward transition between the terms of the current county treasurer and the one who will take office Nov. 15 is forcing the closure of the local driver’s license office for a period of weeks.

County Administrator Anthony Swartzendruber explained the situation to the board of county commissioners on Tuesday while he was recommending an audit of the treasurer’s office.

County Denies Couple Permit For Living In Camper

Verlin and Sonya Siefkes have a year in which they must find a more permanent living situation than the recreational vehicle they call home on North Webb Road.

The Board of Harvey County Commissioners denied the couple’s request for a conditional-use permit on Tuesday.

State Treasurer Presents $2,500 To Northridge School

NEWTON—Northridge Elementary School Principal Megan Nagel stood near a line in the school gym, getting hug after hug from students and even one teacher who were among those gathered there for a big school announcement.

The announcement centered around the school getting awarded $2,500 from the Kansas State Treasurer’s Office Choose My School Supply Drive, which was in August.
