GW4 Director's Update
October 2022

Welcome to the GW4 Newsletter: your spinetingling update of GW4 news, funding and development opportunities. Have no fear - this month’s newsletter is full of treats, no tricks!

Earlier this month, as part of the government’s net zero review, I attended an aviation themed roundtable discussion, hosted by Zero Avia at Cotswold Airport. It was interesting to hear from representatives from across the sector including from Chris Skidmore MP directly, who had visited the IAAPS research and innovation centre at the Bristol and Bath Science Park, earlier that morning, and discuss opportunities for sustainable fuel and hydrogen innovation.

Work continues to harness our research excellence, regional assets and world-class facilities to place our region and the UK at the forefront of global efforts to reach net zero. Following the launch of the UK’s first Hydrogen Ecosystem map for South West and South Wales, GW4 academics have researched current energy system demands across the Western Gateway area identifying gaps in infrastructure and funding, plus opportunities to be realised in order to reach net zero targets. You can read more about this report below.

In other news, I’m delighted to announce GW4 has awarded funding to 18 Humanities and Social Sciences researchers from eight universities, as part of the British Academy Early Career Researcher Network (BA ECRN) South West Hub. Seed funding awards like these offer opportunities for building reputation and expertise, and importantly, developing a history of grant capture that enables career progression. I look forward to seeing how these projects develop and working with our nine university partners on this Hub, funding for which has recently been extended to March 2024.

We have a number of other exciting updates, so read on for more news, events and opportunities in this month’s newsletter.
More investment needed in GW4 region to reach Net Zero according to new report
Further investment is needed across South Wales and Western England in order to reach Net Zero targets according to a new report undertaken by GW4 academics and published by the Western Gateway Partnership.

The report lays bare the gap between the current energy system demands and the green energy infrastructure currently under construction across the area. The study, carried out by the Supergen Energy Networks (SEN) Hub, maps the current energy system and highlights several options which show the area is well placed to export green energy to the rest of the UK, including the potential to produce low carbon hydrogen to store energy and support a hydrogen ecosystem.

GW4 awards 18 new seed funding projects

GW4 has awarded funding to 18 Humanities and Social Sciences researchers from eight universities, as part of the British Academy Early Career Researcher Network (BA ECRN) South West Hub.

The pilot scheme, and £45k funding, enables early, innovative activity where ECRs can test out new ideas and partnerships to generate novel results with the aim of securing more substantial funding in the future.

The projects cover a range of research areas including mental health, archival forensic practices and the use of play and immersive technologies to transform household perceptions of energy consumption.

Researchers inspired to ‘reimagine academia’

This year’s GW4 Crucible Alumni Network event focused on helping our Cruciblees foster renewed energy in their research, provide opportunities for thought-provoking conversations and connect with expert guest speakers.

Cruciblees who attended the event said they enjoyed hearing the experiences of others, and as a result of attending the event would push themselves outside of their comfort zones and work to maintain connections and network with colleagues from across the institutions.

GW4 Opinion: from researcher to research leader

Hear from two of this year’s GW4 Cruciblees, Dr Josie Henley a Research Associate at The Centre for Trials Research, Cardiff University and Dr Irene Salvo a Lecturer in Classics and Ancient History at the University of Exeter on how the residential labs and masterclasses helped them think across disciplines and move from researcher to research leader.

The theme for GW4 Crucible 2022 focused on ‘Building Back Better: Interdisciplinary Approaches to Mental Health and Wellbeing Research’.

GW4 living labs: Scope 3 and the road to Net Zero

The GW4 Climate Alliance has launched a six-month pilot project to establish a ‘Living Labs’ network across Bath, Bristol, Cardiff and Exeter universities.

The project, funded by a £50K investment from the GW4 Alliance, aims to accelerate the transition towards net zero university campuses – a process that will impact many activities including research, learning and teaching, on-site operations, and supply chains.

The next workshop, taking place in Bristol on Wednesday 30th November, will explore practical steps Universities and their external partners can take to tackle Scope 3 emissions including supply chains and travel.
