Hello,

Welcome to Sort of Nothing Like A Book Club, the newsletter from Creative CoLab.

World Space Week took place a few weeks ago. Celebrating Space and Sustainability, participants in over 90 countries joined together to celebrate. Inspired by this, we have been taking a look at how space and the arts interact and influence each other.

Read on to find out what we discovered...

Art & Astronomy: Exploring our universe creatively

In this article I look at the relationship between art and space. Our universe is fascinating and for centuries artists have been taking inspiration from the beauty and mystery of our universe. I look at ways that art and science have influenced each other throughout history.
Science fiction meets science fact: how film inspired the Moon landing
This is a very interesting read about how the Apollo 11 Moon landing in 1969 was made possible by the publics interest and support for space travel as fiction had given the public an idea of what could be possible in outer space. It looks at both literature and film and how scientists were both inspired by and helped create the portrayal of space travel.

Sketching the Stars: How Art Can Advance Astronomy
This article looks at how art and astronomy have been inseparable for centuries. It looks at how before technology to photograph our universe, astronomers were required to be artists. How artists and scientists work together and how the images of space aren't just used for scientific purposes, but can be see as art, and have even been printed on fabrics to make dresses.

Exploring the solar system through space art
This piece looks at astronomical art. It looks at how scientists publish their work, and then astronomical realist painters translate the results to show what distant parts of our universe would look like. With many fantastic examples of astronomical artwork it shows the fascinating and productive relationship painters and scientists have.

From Interstellar to Hidden Figures: 12 of the best space movies
If this newsletter has inspired you to watch something space themed this week- the New Scientist has put together a list of the 12 best space movies for you to enjoy.

And Lastly...

It's fascinating to see how sci-fi and art has influenced science and space exploration. Its fantastic to see so much media exploring space - hopefully its inspiring the next generation of astronauts and engineers.

If you have anything you'd like to share about what we've looked at in this issue we'd love for you to get in touch!
Bye!
