San Carlos and Guaymas Photos

SpaceX launch seen from San Carlos, by Jim Pritchard

Several restaurants around town hosted Halloween Parties this weekend. Check out these creative costumes, seen at Colibrí's and HammerHead's. Members of Athleticlub San Carlos also had a ghoulishly good time on Halloween.

The Calaca Festival in Guaymas had activities for the whole family - music, dancing, theatre, Day of the Dead parade, and traditional altars.

  • Join us on Facebook for photos, event updates and more (more than 16,400 people already do).
  • Tecalai Library will be open to the public every Friday from 9:00am to noon, starting November 4. The library operates on a leave-one, take-one basis or you can make a donation.
  • The Castaway Kids Thrift Store is now open Thursdays and Saturdays from 9:00am to 12:00pm.
  • Daylight Saving Time ends at 2:00am on Sunday, November 6. Sonora and most of Arizona do not observe Daylight Saving Time - our time will remain the same. Everyone else should remember to set your clocks back one hour before bed Saturday night. Last week, Mexico’s Senate approved a measure eliminating daylight saving time in most of Mexico. With the law’s passage, many in Mexico will be turning back their clocks for the last time this Sunday.
  • Yesterday, 171 baby turtles made their way into the sea from San Francisco beach. Please be mindful that turtle hatchings generally take place over the next few months here in San Carlos. The eggs won't survive if we drive over the nests with ATVs or let our dogs dig them up and the babies won't be able to make their way to the water if the sand has tire tracks or garbage.
  • As you snowbirds start to make your way back to sun and fun (aka San Carlos), remember that you need to have Mexican car insurance. Even if your U.S. or Canadian insurance includes an extension of physical damage coverage for Mexico, you still must purchase a separate policy that includes liability coverage from a Mexico insurance carrier.
  • You may also want to look into cross-border health insurance. Did you know that most health insurance plans won’t cover medical treatment in Mexico? Click to check out some options.
  • November 19th - Save the Date! CRRIFS will be holding its 2nd annual Tianguis/Yard Sale to help support their many programs, including sea turtle conservation and sea lion disentanglement. How can you help? First, do a little fall cleaning and ask family and friends to do the same. Bring your gently used or new donation items to the Wildlife center in the Ranchitos on November 18th. Then, on November 19, come to the sale and find some treasures to purchase. Thanks in advance for your support!
  • There is sports equipment, vehicles, boats, houses for sale and rent, and more, listed in the Classifieds. There are also people looking for items, so if you have any to sell, list them now -- it's free.

Join us on this new adventure to the “City of Angels”, Puebla, a worthy World Heritage Site, famous for its Baroque architecture, its Talavera crafts and gastronomy; and get a glimpse of the sophisticated metropolis that is Mexico City, or CDMX as it is referred to by the capitalinos.

We start in the city of Puebla, the sprawling capital of the State with the same name and place where the famous Battle of 5 de Mayo took place. We then move to Mexico City, where we stay long enough to visit some of the most famous landmarks and sites, like the museums in the Chapultepec area, Teotihuacan area, and more.

This seven day tour includes round trip air Hermosillo-Mexico City, private transportation between San Carlos and Hermosillo airport, 3 nights lodging in the City of Puebla, 3 nights lodging in Mexico City, private transportation in our destinations, breakfast every day at our hotels, local tours, bilingual escorts, and more. Fishing & Diving Reports

Fishing Report

Since my last report made the fishing sound slow, the next day was epic. We had a quadruple hookup and landed four yellowtail on Rapalas. The fish were boiling early throughout the week, and we had to quit a couple times after a few hours. Some big Bonita were out there, as well as a few Sierra. At times the yellowtail were in close off the points.

Offshore they continued to catch Dorado, sailfish, and Striped Marlin. A few Dorado were in the 20 - 30 pound range. They are a little farther out now. Wednesday might be the last good day to try in the forecast.

The inshore action continues to improve. We were driving out to Choyuda and I realized that I should have brought a rod. Sure enough a massive boil of large jacks erupted right off the shore. I believe I saw them one time in the bay too. Skipjack are everywhere, and within casting distance of shore. I've seen a few snapper caught off my point. With all the bait coming in, the predators shouldn't be too far behind.

Diving Report

Shangri-La Cove often has the sunset cruisers and party boats stopping by to take that iconic photo op with people on the bow of the boat and the window/swim through in the background. But, below the water there are some fascinating critters living. This dive site is often overlooked because it is busy and some think it is too close and won’t have much to see.

On Sunday, a group of divers found lots to see at this site. The swim through offers beautiful examples of sponges, cup corals and a variety of invertebrates. Take a flashlight to look in the crevices. We found small lobster in a couple of the cracks. Several kinds of gobies (Redhead goby pictured on left) and blennies also like to hide out in this area where it is mostly dark all day.

After swimming through west to east, turn right (south) and continue along the reef. Again use your flashlight to look under ledges. We found three Green moray eels (pictured right)...all very healthy looking!

There are also bright red Barspot cardinalfish that live deep under rocks or ledges. In one crevice, a Balloonfish was hiding out. We also saw swimming crabs, octopus, sun starfish, speckled flatworms, and 3 kinds of nudibranchs. You never know what you are going to see at Shangri-La. You can also snorkel the area and see a nice variety of fish...angelfish, butterflyfish, wrasses and more.

Temperatures are dropping. It was 74 degrees and the visibility was only fair, about 10 - 15 feet. It is time for a little thicker wetsuit.

Handymen/women Needed for Castaway Kids Projects

Mark Mulligan’s first work with Castaway Kids in 1994. The program expanded after the devastating effects of Hurricane Jimena. The Charles D. Trover Family Foundation joined the team in 2016. This has made it possible to continue to improve housing for our Mexican neighbors living in vulnerable situations.

We repair roofs, add flooring, cover windows, install doors, and improve septic and plumbing systems. Castaway Kids has built entire homes, many for single mothers and their children. Having a safe home reduces the risk of mental stress and the trauma of a perilous living situation.

What can you do?
 * We would to love have a small group of handymen and women available to help with small projects like hanging doors, general landscaping, and basic repairs for properties.
 * We often receive donations of electronics and other items that require some tinkering and/or small improvements. If you like the challenge of making the old new again, we would love to have you on our team!
 * Donate your gently used household goods like sheets, small appliances, and dishes and furniture to our Thrift Store.
 * If you use Amazon Smile, select Castaway Kids as your designated charity. A portion of your overall spending will be donated to Castaway Kids.

Thank you for your support!

CRRIFS: Sleepless in San Carlos: Bringing Up Baby Possums

In the wild, with an average of 6 - 9 babies per litter, 2 - 3 litters per year and a gestation period of a mere 12 days, mother possums are kept very busy. Their babies, which are about the size of a centavo coin when they’re first born, are not fully developed. They will continue to mature inside their mother’s pouch for another 3 - 4 months, until they’re too big for the pouch, and they can graduate to riding around on their mother’s back.

So when a Good Samaritan brought 12 baby possums to Dr. Elsa Coria, wildlife veterinarian and director of CRRIFS, she knew that she would have many sleepless nights ahead of her, caring for the neonates.

The babies’ mother had been hit by a car in Guaymas. Car strikes are one of the most common reasons for wildlife injuries and rescue referrals. Baby possums like their marsupial cousins, including kangaroos, koalas and Tasmanian devils, often survive crashes protected inside their mother’s pouches.

Guaymas veterinarian, Dr. Hector Laguna, was able to carefully remove the babies from their mother’s teats. He then recommended that they be brought to Dr. Elsa and CRRIFS for ongoing care.

Over the next several months, Dr. Elsa and her staff and volunteers will feed the infants a special milk donated by veterinary colleague, Dr. Vanessa Mladineo, every 2 - 3 hours until the babies can gradually be weaned and taught to forage on their own.

By 6 - 7 months, the juveniles should be able to manage on their own. At that time, they can be released back to the wild, where they’ll play an important role, consuming a wide range of pests including cockroaches, slugs, ticks & rodents and disposing of carrion.

To learn more about CRRIFS’ conservation programs or to report injured wildlife or sea turtle tracks or nests, please email contacto@crrifs.org or call (622) 152 9934.
