 New Modality Technology

You may have a particular image in your mind when it comes to services like physical therapy. Perhaps some small free weights, massage, and an e-stim machine. PTs have many tools at their disposal for treating pain outside of those modalities. Here at Mercy Sports Medicine, your physical therapists may determine a treatment from the K-Laser will help with your healing and pain. The K-Laser uses light at specific frequencies and intensities to activate the mitochondria in your cells to improve healing or desensitize nerves to reduce pain.

 Race You There!

Even as the temps continue to fall, there are plenty of opportunities to get outside. This upcoming fall there are many running events which can help motivate you to get outside in the colder weather. Bayfield, Pagosa Springs, and Durango are each hosting a Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving. Both the Bayfield and Pagosa Turkey Trots are 5Ks, while the Durango Turkey Trot is a 5 mile run with 1 one mile kids option.

 TenJet Technology in Office

Dr. Sylvia Rozek uses a method in her practice that is different from other practitioners. She uses what is called a TenJet procedure for different cases of tendinosis, tendinopathy or chronic tendinitis. This is a minimally invasive treatment used for tendon pain. The treatment requires only a small incision and is performed in an outpatient setting. Dr Rozek uses ultrasound imaging to visualize the diseased tissue. The TenJet is then inserted into the area of the pain inducing tissue. Once the positioning is correct a high velocity stream of saline is used to remove the diseased tissue. This treatment is here to help her patients get back to their daily activities without the need of conventional surgery.

Importance of a Whole Food Diet

Most are familiar with macronutrients: fat, protein and carbohydrates. However, things like micronutrients like vitamins, minerals, and phytonutrients are just as important. While we need to eat to survive, we also need to be intentional about WHAT we are eating to stay alive! Foods high in chemical additives, refined carbohydrates, and refined sugars are lacking the nutrient density that you would be getting with real whole food choices. Think of whole foods as foods in their natural form leaving them minimally processed and maximally nutritious. Look for the fruits and vegetables that are the brightest and richest colors. Quality does matter when shopping for butter from grass-fed cows and eggs from pasture-raised chickens. You might even notice in these pasture-raised chickens they tend to have a richer color due to their own nutrient content. When shopping, change the question from “how many calories” to “how many nutrients”.

Try out these 3 tips for incorporating nutrient dense, whole foods into your diet:

Do a pantry cleanse

Set aside foods in your pantry and fridge that don’t fit into the “real food” category. Do your best to avoid those foods and work to find whole food alternatives.

Get 5+ colors on your plate

Colors can help to indicate nutrient content, aim to get 5 different colors on your plate at a meal.

Try new things

Don’t be afraid to try new foods! Next trip to the grocery store pick one new vegetable or pick a new way to prepare your favorite. Adding variety can add new nutrients.

 Alternative Pain Management Program

We are excited to introduce our Alternative Pain Management Program. Chronic pain can be something people deal with for years before seeking help or qualifying for surgery.

What you may not realize is that stress, diet, exercise, and sleep all play a vital role in the management of pain.
