Welcome! We Bring You Tidings...

...the monthly email newsletter of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in Lake Worth Beach. Stay current with the latest events and information about our church community where EVERYONE is truly welcome!
Forward to Friend Forward to Friend

Dear Friends,

November is Stewardship month here at St. Andrew’s. Let me say a few words about that.

First, what is stewardship? The short answer is that it is taking care of the things we have. We have been asked by God to care for creation. Adam was placed in the garden to tend it in the beginning. To be a good steward is to take good care. While we don’t exactly have a garden, we do have a church. It means both taking care of the buildings and also taking care of the people who come here. It means tending to our members and also to our neighbors. And it means providing a sacred space for worship and a safe place to gather.

As with many churches, our stewardship month is tied closely to our budgeting process. As Jesus says, no one builds a tower without first making sure that they have the funds to complete the project. We are blessed and fortunate that people in the past have left us with funds so that we are able to draw upon those to help us through difficult and trying times, as we’ve seen with Covid. Many of our expenses are truly fixed. In our stewardship efforts, we are looking to pay for staff, electricity (really dear here in Lake Worth Beach), insurance (really dear here in Florida), and general worship and hospitality expenses. All told, about $450,000 a year.

But it really is more than responsibility and budgets. It is even more than bringing the love of God to the people of Lake Worth Beach and the surrounding areas. With the internet, we reach people in far flung places. We bring community to those who are homebound. We connect people who have never met face to face as they worship God and study the Word together. It is truly an exciting time.

It is also a time of crisis. After over two years of a pandemic, every habit we had was changed! From church attendance, to even going out, the world is different now. We are part of God’s great multitude whose mission is to meet every crisis with Hope, with Faith, and with Love! We are not here just for ourselves and just for now. The Church is part of a long history of sharing with others and looking always to the future working to build community and justice.

I want my picture on the wall of the church to be in the midst of pictures of priests yet unborn. I want people to point at it and say, Rev. Cori was here at a time of great challenge but also of great excitement. They had fun serving God and worshipping together. And because of them, all of them, the church exists still!

Oh, I do hope that you want to be a part of that! I pray that you will see this as a mission of God that needs you and rejoices in your being a part of it. This is your church. We are all stewards. May we be good ones and may we be worthy of the name of St. Andrews!

 Love you all,

Thoughts from Deacon Bob & Dick Lewallen

It is very appropriate that this month is Thanksgiving because my heart is filled with thanks, gratitude, and appreciation. I am, obviously, very thankful for my return to good health after my recent illness and for all the Lord's blessings.

I am thankful and most appreciative for the support of the parish through that time. Thank you all for the prayers which sustained me and gave me great comfort. I also appreciate all the cards, notes, phone calls, text messages, emails, and other expressions of caring.

Another thing I am thankful for is all the positive support and gestures of appreciation which we received during clergy appreciation month. Every note, song, poem, gift, and poster were greatly appreciated and enjoyed.

November is the time we think about Thanksgiving, but hopefully our whole lives have an attitude of gratitude for all our Lord does for us. When I think about Thanksgiving, I also remember the line from a poem by Helen Steiner Rice:

" The key to life and living is to make everyday a day of thanks and
everyday Thanksgiving."
In St. Andrews I have found my spiritual home and my adopted family. During my recent illness, I was overwhelmed with all the prayers, cards, visits, love and good wishes. I am on the mend, now and am eager to get back into the swing of things. Thanks a million to all of you. I love you all.

November Pet of the Month

Meet Bernie!

Katarina Bernice Alexandra Beethoven III – aka BERNIEEEEEEEE, is Mary and Jim’s nine year old Old English Sheepdog. Named for favorite relatives, Bernie is our third sheepdog.
Jim likes big dogs, Mary likes fluffy – Bernie is 100 pounds of non stop fun. Bernie LOVES food and coffee … her favorite snack besides peanut butter treats is carrots.
Bernie loves to play and is most known for taking anything not belonging to her and holding it for ransom. She repeatedly steals the TV remote and we must pay for its’ return. She loves to change the channel at any opportunity and we’ve lost count of the remotes we’ve replaced.
Bernie enjoys watching baseball (she’s a Minnesota Twins fan) and golf – we think it’s the pretty green grass.

Bernie enjoys playing with her tennis and soccer balls and often deflates them for added fun.
Bernie LOVES snow and misses playing in it. She also likes to eat snowballs.
As a puppy Bernie was known as the paper girl and delighted in delivering the neighbors’ newspapers to their front doors. Bernie enjoyed being a part of all the virtual school during covid and she faithfully attended as many classes as she could.
She has a big voice to match her size. She thinks she is a person.
Bernie doesn’t enjoy super warm weather and definitely is not a fan of thunderstorms. Bernie enjoys being petted and rides in the car! - Submitted by Mary Nelson & James Balmer, our fabulous organist and choir director.

New Ministry!

We are trying again!

By “popular demand “ the St. Andrew’s Prayer Shawl Ministry is restarting.  This is beautiful opportunity to come together to create with our hands and share the love of God in our hearts. It is a time for praying and making lovely shawls to give to those in need of comfort.

We are planning our first gathering for Monday, November 7, at 9:00 am in the parish hall. In the meantime, we have several Prayer Shawls Ministry Books with patterns from beginners to expert. They can be borrowed from Carol Sink.

So knitters and crocheters, pick a pattern, purchase your yarn or raid your stash, and join us!

News from the Mary and Martha Chapter
of the Daughters of the King.

On behalf of Deacon Bob and myself, we would like to thank you all for your prayers. It is such an awesome experience when you are on the side of “ receiving prayers” verses praying for others.  We felt your love, strength, and peace during that scary time.  There is power in our prayers and Praises to our God!

There is a song I love to sing called “Give Thanks With A Grateful Heart”, and I want to thank each of you that have contributed to the hygiene needs of the homeless.  I wish I could convey to you how thankful they truly are for your donations. During Way Café, on Tuesday the 18th, we distributed 51 kits.  Now that the weather to our north is getting colder, I’m sure our numbers will continue to grow. With that in mind, we would like to purchase for them Mylar Thermal Blankets that are windproof, waterproof and lightweight.  I can get a case of 100 blankets for $87.00.  If anyone would like to contribute to this endeavor, please let me know, or drop a few dollars into the envelopes found in the pews marked Daughters of the King. If you wish to write a check to St. Andrew’s please put in the Memo Section of your check, “Daughters of the King”.

Our Discernment period for those wishing to become Daughters is going well.  We currently have 6 ladies participating. We meet once a month on a Saturday morning. The Admission Service into the order will be held on January 15th during the 10am service.  In less that two years the Mary & Martha Chapter of our church will grow from 4 to 16 members pledging our lives to Prayer, Service and Evangelism to our God and our church.

We continue to pray daily for our parish and for those that have asked for special prayers.  If you have a request, please fill out the “Prayer Request” card on the table at the back of the church and either give to one of the ushers or place in the offering plate.

Our love and prayers are with you,
Linda Sullivan, President

Motto of the Order
For His Sake…
I am but one, but I am one.
I cannot do everything, but I can do something.
What I can do, I ought to do.
What I ought to do, by the grace of God I will do.
Lord, what will you have me do?
