THE VIEW FROM ISD
As the US midterms approach, ISD analysts are monitoring threats to officials, election workers, and voters, across a range of online spaces, with increased concern. On the same day as Head of Elections Jiore Craig spoke to CNN about the risks posed by poll watchers, a man allegedly sought to kidnap or assassinate Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi. Suspect David Depaper is alleged to have attacked her husband with a hammer and has being charged with, among other things, attempted murder. ISD's analysis of suspect David DePape's online footprint and conspiratorial beliefs led ABC News' coverage of the attack.

Simultaneously, new owner of Twitter Elon Musk has begun to allow election denying candidates back on to the platform, permitting them to continue to spread anti-democratic narratives to a wide audience. This action will only exacerbate the damage being caused to democracy by those seeking to undermine the electoral process.

ISD NEWS
In advance of COP27, Climate Action Against Disinformation (CAAD) has launched its latest initiative to track ‘discourses of delay’ and anti-climate lines of attack at the transnational level. Monitoring will analyse content across public Facebook, Instagram, Reddit, Telegram, TikTok, Twitter and YouTube on a daily basis, focussing on efforts to undermine or overturn key negotiated outcomes in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt.

The Intelligence Unit, overseen by ISD, brings together partners from across the climate and disinformation analysis sectors. Building on last year's unprecedented efforts to map and respond to climate disinformation which culminated in ISD's landmark report, 'Deny, Deceive, Delay', the unit will focus on emerging trends and shifts in the geopolitical landscape since countries last convened at COP26 in Glasgow. These include how climate mis/disinformation intersects with the fallout from Russia's invasion of Ukraine, as well as responses to global 'cost of living' crises and economic downturns.
