ON THE BIT - FRIDAY 28th OCTOBER 2022
Please find the link below to a short video where I chat with HRSA Racing Operations Manager David Thuen about recent local and national announcements.

HRSA update: October 2022 on Vimeo

With the aid of local rules that deeply consider the dynamics of our horse population, HRSA will continue to provide strong focus and commitment towards:

  • Supporting young racehorses with programming that supplies opportunities to maximise earnings, and develop their craft within the most suitable pool of horses
  • Managing a racing schedule that promotes longevity within our local ranks
  • Introduce progressive concepts and programming that will equate to competitive racing
  • Growth strategies for horse population
  • Sustainable approach to growing prize money levels across all classes and categories
  • Take a holistic approach to analysing our racing landscape

May I finish by sharing several interesting stats:

  • August – October 2022 has seen 37% of races in SA resulted with a winning margin of less than 1.5 metres. This is an increase from 30% of races during August – October 2021. Furthermore, 22% of races have been decided by less than a neck (compared to 18% in the previous period)
  • The average price of a winner in SA last financial year was at a healthy $6.73, which sits within desirable parameters. An equation to help get a gauge of the expected price of winners is to take the average field size (which for SA during this period was 7.63) and compare it to Starting Price ($6.73) + Bookmaker’s margin (10-15%) = 7.40 - 7.74
  • A large factor that impacts wagering and competitive racing is the number of horses that start $1.30 or less (this is the price where wagering begins to noticeably decline). Throughout 2022, according to HRA data, SA has consistently had a lower than national average percentage of $1.30 favourites

Best Wishes
Dean

GLOBE DERBY PARK- SATURDAY 29th OCTOBER 2022
Race 1: THE STORM INSIDE  @ ALABAR STUD FARM CLAIMING PACE
HIT THE SKY (7) is getting better with each start he has for David Harding. He has won his last two starts and doesn’t necessarily need to lead to win. He is a strong chance tonight.
JAKES SPORTWRITER (6) has been racing well and will be a threat tonight.
CROOKWELL JAKE (5) and RUTHLESS ARMBRO (3) are also chances.

Race 2: HYGAIN TROTTERS DISCRETIONARY
LORD CHANCELLOR (2) should be able to lob into a forward position off the front mark. He was beaten 4.6 metres behind HAMMERS LAW two starts ago. If he improves off that run he will be dangerous against this field.
CHAMPAGNE PRINCE (6) is the best horse in this race but he is returning after a six week break and has the tricky handicap to overcome.
ALDEBARAN ALISSA (5) and ENROLLED (3) are also chances.

Race 3: RIDE HIGH @ ALABAR STUD FARM PACE
RUDI SANDEL (6) will love the longer trip tonight. If he brings his best run then he will be running over the top over the concluding stages.
DANCING FINN (3) is a strong chance of finding the lead early. If she leads she will be a strong chance but the 2230 may be a little issue for her.
CLARENDEN ENVOY (5) and SIR ROMAN (1) are also chances.

Race 4: TAB VENUE MODE TROTTERS HANDICAP
OUR SPITFIRE (5) has put in some strong performances from the stand start recently. She didn’t look completely comfortable from the mobile start last start but still run a good race. She is a strong chance tonight.
LOVELORN (8), KYVALLEY SURFERGIRL (2) and GREAT FANTASY (3) are also chances.

Race 5: CELEBRATE MELBOURNE CUP DAY @ THE GLOBE PACE
AMMICCHI (1) can be a bit up and down as far as his form is concerned. She gets the perfect draw here and the perfect opportunity to win.
DELIGHTFUL GNP (5) was a winner last start from the inside draw when she defeated SIR ROMAN. She is worth consideration tonight.
AMORE ROCK (4) and MAJOR MAD (2) are also chances.

Race 6: 2022 ALABAR SA BOTRA GOLDEN NURSERY FINAL
JAMAICAN ROCK (9) is undefeated and has won all of his three starts. He will be hard to beat tonight despite the tricky draw.
RUPERT ROSS (7), LETHAL LOUIE (6) and HES ALL TORQUE (8) are also chances.

Race 7: 2022 TAB SA ST LEGER
EVER HOPING (1) has won his last three starts. His overall record of 8 wins from 17 starts speaks for itself. He will be a major chance from the inside draw.
The stable mate ART JESTER (2) will be the only danger to EVER HOPING. He has won three of his last four starts.
CARLISLE CRUISER (4) and JUST CHAI (5) are also chances.

Race 8: BARGAIN STEEL CENTRE PACE
CELESTIAL DAYBREAK (2) will find the lead early. Once he hits the front he will be very hard to run down.
BARNEY FELLA (1) should get a gun run behind CELESTIAL DAYBREAK.
KAHINA (3) and ABOVE AVERAGE (5) are also chances.

Race 9: BIANCO REINFORCING PACE
SHAZZAM (6) has won his last two starts in Victoria. He will be pretty hard to beat tonight.
GIFTEDFROMTHEHEART (2), LENNY TEE (5) and TRUE BLUE ROSE (4) are also chances.

GLOBE DERBY PARK - MONDAY 31st  OCTOBER 2022
Race 1: THE GLOBE BAR & GAMING PACE
BRANTLEY (1) is second up from a spell today. His first up run was good enough to suggest he will run a strong race today from the inside draw.
STRATOFORTRESS (5) now racing for the Frank Pullicino stable. He is first up from a six week break and worth consideration and must be respected.
MR KIWI (4) and WRANGLER (6) are also chances.

Race 2: VISS WATER TROTTERS MOBILE
IRENE ROSE (8) loves the mobile starts. She has been racing consistently and looks like a threat today.
EMMA JOY (2) is a nice horse but mixes her manners and looks like a risk.
KYVALLEY SHERRIF (5) and GRAYWOODS DIAMOND (4) are also chances.

Race 3: ECO-WISE PLUMBING GROUP PACE
TEDDY SANDEL (6) showed some ability in a recent trail at Globe Derby. If he can repeat that run he will be a threat.
SUNSHINEANRAINBOWS (2), KUHIO CREST (10) and ALWYNE FRANCO (1) are also chances.

Race 4: HYGAIN FIBER FRESH PACE
MISTER CHEESE (3) put together his best career run last start to defeat TEXDATERROR by 21 metres. If he repeats that run he will bolt in today.
CELESTIAL ZODIAC (8), DEADLINE (5) and TUSCAN STAR (6) are also chances.

Race 5: TAB LONG MAY WE PLAY PACE
WEWILL HAIL CAESAR (5) is a chance of finding the lead here. If he leads he should win.
GROWLERS LAST (10) led all of the way to defeat TUSCAN STAR by 5 metres last week. He can come from behind if needed. He will be a threat.
MIDNIGHT SPORT (1) will run a strong race from the inside draw.
SUTTER MAN (7) is also a chance but prefer to risk here after recent runs.

Race 6: MELBOURNE CUP LUNCHEON @ THE GLOBE PACE
IM REGGIE (10) has a drop down in class here compared to recent runs. He will take some beating if he gets the right run.
If LIEUTENANT JACK (5) can repeat his run from two starts back he will be dangerous but he needs everything to exactly to his liking to win a race.
STRAWBERRY DELIGHT (6) and ROYAL CADENCE (8) are also chances.

Race 7: JOHN ROTHE VIDEO PACE
THE SNEAKY FOX (3) should get a nice run from gate three. She defeated WHATISAYGOES by 2.2 metres last start. She should be too good again today.
CELESTIAL DAYBREAK (8), BIG BLACK BETTY (4) and OUR MAJOR JACK (7) are also chances.

Race 8: HOPKINS SADDLERY PACE
THISWAYTOTHEBEACH (8) has a tremendous strike rate when Samantha Pascoe is in the sulky. He returns from a lengthy spell today but was a big 21 metre two runs before that spell. If he brings his best run today he will be too good for this field.
ILLAWONG KIM (6), CHEMICAL REACTOR (7) and CARLY MORGAN (3) are also chances.

TRAINERS: Please note- If any horse in your care undergoes a post/pre-race Veterinary examination, at a race meeting they are engaged at, it is imperative that you report to the Stewards once the examination is complete.
Please do not leave the course until such time that the Stewards have had an opportunity to discuss the findings of the veterinarian, including if the examination fails to reveal any abnormalities.

NOTICE - USE OF ALTRENOGEST IN FILLIES AND MARES

Trainers are alerted to previous advice (issued in 2018) surrounding products containing Altrenogest.  The product has been used to control the cycling of mares and fillies and in doing so assist with any health and safety concerns, as well as ensuring consistent racing performances in mares and fillies.
After considering the information available to HRSA and consultation with veterinarians, it is recommended Trainers do not administer injectable products containing Altrenogest and that oral products should not be used within one clear day of racing.  This advice was issued after the detection of trace levels of the anabolic steroid Trendione and/or Trenbolone in certain batches of veterinary prescription animal remedies.
HRSA directs that the Trainer of a mare or filly requiring treatment with a product containing Altrenogest must seek advice from a registered veterinarian.  The administration must be at the recommendation of a veterinarian and that registered products must be used in accordance with the relevant manufacturer’s guidelines.  Trainers will be required to have supporting documentation.
South Australian Trainers looking to race interstate confirm the requirements of other Controlling Bodies regarding Rules and/or Policies re the use of Altrenogest.
Trainers are also alerted that the use of unregistered products and products, not manufactured or registered specifically for use in horses, are prohibited from being used in racing stables.
