A NOTE FROM PASTOR DAVE

Good morning everyone!  I hope that you have had a very good week. It looks like we will be having another week or more of good weather. That should give us more time to enjoy the outdoors, and the field workers plenty of time to harvest the crops and get them to the storage facilities. Please keep them in your prayers for safety, in addition to the persons and concerns listed a bit lower on this page.

It has been another busy week here at St Mark and more to come this weekend. Here is a link to this weekend's worship service outline and news about what is happening at St Mark and how you can get more involved.

REFORMATION SUNDAY
This weekend we celebrate the anniversary of the Reformation.  This week I shared a fun video with the Confirmation students that helps to explain what the Reformation was about, and who Martin Luther was. This is a link to the video.  The work of the Holy Spirit through Luther and the other Reformers continues to renew and reshape the Church.

ALL SAINT SUNDAY
Next Sunday, November 6, we celebrate All Saints Sunday. It is the day of the Church year when we remember the baptized who have come before us, who are here now, and who are yet to come. During the opening hymn of the service, everyone will be invited to light a candle in remembrance of those who have gone before us to join the great cloud of witnesses.  It is one of my favorite services of the year.

FALL GENEROSITY APPEAL
On Tuesday, we hope to send out this fall's invitation to give generously in 2023. The letter helps to explain why we do an annual appeal, why what we do at St Mark makes a difference, and it will include a financial pledge card for 2023 and a form for sharing your time and abilities to serve in the ministry of St Mark.

Something new this year will be the online forms and opportunities to serve that are being created for this appeal. Dah is working on them now and they should be available early this coming week. We will tell you more about it next week.

BURRITO SALE
Don't forget to stop by on Saturday for the burrito sale. It has become a thing for the entire Storm Lake community. The women of Ayudanos a Ayudar prepare the ingredients and make the burritos.  They are delicious, and you won't have to mess up the kitchen tomorrow.  Stop in to the Fellowship Hall and say hello. All proceeds go to help with medical expenses, here is a link with details.

I hope to see you in worship this weekend.

Peace to you,
Pastor Dave

VETS TOGETHER – This is a new opportunity at St Mark for veterans of the United States military branches. There is no agenda other than an opportunity for veterans of the United States military services to have a place to be with others who have had similar experiences and who are willing to receive and give encouragement to others. As veterans go through re-entry into civilian life, they may experience short and long-term challenges unique to veterans such as PTSD, disabilities; reconnecting to family and friends; finding meaningful employment, and other struggles. Vets Together meet on Wednesday evenings 6:00 PM in room 128. The gatherings are open to all community persons. Please share this opportunity with friends.

PROCLAIM RADIO MINISTRY Proclaim is a radio ministry of St Mark and is broadcast every Sunday morning at 7:30 AM via FM 101.7 KAYL. The message and music are from the previous weekend. This ministry is one of the ways we reach out to Storm Lake and Western Iowa with the love of Jesus. We invite you to consider supporting this ministry in addition to your regular financial support of St Mark. Cost is $38 per week and can be given online or by check. You can sign-up for a Sunday on the bulletin board sign-up located on the bulletin board near the west entrance to the building. Call Jane Hartwell 732-5255 if you have questions.

ATTENTION ST. MARK BOOK LOVERS – Are you interested in reading and discussing books with others? We have a new small group at St Mark to do just that. We will gather this Sunday, October 30th, and discuss the book Finding Chilka: a Little Girl, an earthquake, and the Making of a Family by Mitch Albom. The discussion will take place right after worship at 10:00. We will meet for about an hour, and anyone is welcome. The next book we will be reading and discussing on November 13th is The Book of Longings by Sue Monk Kidd. “Grounded in meticulous research and written with a reverential approach to Jesus's life that focuses on his humanity, The Book of Longings is an inspiring, unforgettable account of one woman's bold struggle to realize the passion and potential inside her while living in a time, place, and culture devised to silence her.” If you have questions, please contact Cindy Smith at cgsmith1604@gmail.com.

LIFE SERVE BLOOD DRIVE – The next Life Serve Blood Drive will be this next Tuesday, November 1 at St. Mark, from 12:30-5:30. You can register online or text LIFESERVE to 999-777 to make an appointment to Give Blood. If you would like to know any other info about donating blood and Life Serve Blood Center, just click on this link, or contact Jane Hartwell in the Church Office.

TRUNK OR TREAT – is this Monday, October 31, 5:00-7:00 pm. We are looking for persons to “open their trunks” to share “treats”. There is still time to purchase and drop off “treats” at the church for the kids. We hope the number of kids from the community that come to St. Mark for this event keeps growing as it has in the last few years. Click here to participate in this event!

UPPER DES MOINES FOOD SHELF NEEDS OUR HELP – the Upper Des Moines Opportunities Food Shelf staff has stated that any food is welcomed at the pantry. The following items are very low and needed at this time: cereal, oatmeal, peanut butter, canned fruit & vegetables, beans and rice, spaghetti sauce and pasta. Other items needed: laundry soap, dish soap, shampoo, body soap, toothpaste, toothbrushes, toilet paper, and paper towels. You can drop the food off in the grocery cart by the church office or at Upper Des Moines Opportunities Food Shelf, 620 Michigan Street, in Storm Lake.

FRIENDS WITH FOOD UPDATE – Would you like to help? Friends with Food is a partnership of St Mark Lutheran Church and SALUD working together to offer a monthly food distribution to those who are permanently or temporarily homebound and with no easy access to transportation. The last food distribution was Thursday, October 20, with groups from University of Iowa and University of Northern Iowa helping out, in addition to those who are here month in and month out helping to feed the hungry of Storm Lake and beyond. Please contact Jane Hartwell 712-732- 5255, Di Daniels 712-299-9863 or Julie Cook Western Iowa Synod Office 732-4968 if you want to help, or know of someone who could use some help with food, or have questions.
