International Education Week

Monday, November 14 - 18 | Explore the Week Events

From Nov. 14-18, UMD will join education institutions across the U.S. and around the world in celebrating International Education Week 2022 (#IEW2022). #IEW2022 provides a platform to celebrate the international diversity and global engagement that contribute to UMD’s vibrance and excellence. It is also a chance to highlight humanity’s interconnectedness and the importance of global collaboration and connection for addressing the grand challenges of our time. This year, in keeping with UMD’s Fearlessly Forward strategic plan, OIA is launching Global Dialogues, in collaboration with campus and international partners. Global Dialogues are events and activities--both during IEW and going forward--that will engage UMD students in conversation and reflection around our shared global grand challenges.

Celebrating A Decade of Green Dining

UMD’s award-winning Dining Services program has served as a leader for sustainability initiatives on campus for over a decade. From reducing food waste to creating healthy and low-carbon menu options, Green Dining programs aim to educate the campus community while making strides toward the university's goal of carbon neutrality. UMD's sustainable food efforts span across the food system from farm to fork to compost. Each year, exceptional staff, faculty, and students drive the continued progress and success of UMD's Green Dining program. To capture these efforts, the Office of Sustainability recorded the history of their efforts in a new article on the SustainableUMD Progress. Explore an interactive timeline, progress dashboards, and learn about new programs!

Remembering Sustainability Staff

The SustainableUMD Network would like to remember William “Bill” Guididas. Bill worked at UMD for more than a decade, serving initially as Recycling Coordinator for campus solid waste, recycling, and composting programs then later moving into a director role for Building and Landscape Management. In these roles, Bill greatly expanded campus recycling and composting programs, for example: the mini-bin and "Can-the-Can" programs to increase recycling in office spaces; the introduction of composting and recycling in the Student Union, at athletic events, and at other special events like Maryland Day; and the general development of recycling education and awareness activities across campus.

Bill was a very good, kind person and was an excellent teammate and partner. At UMD, he will be remembered for his unwavering commitment to the university, his expertise in his industry, and his efforts to continuously expand his program areas. His team is deeply saddened by his passing and those of us who worked with him in the SustainableUMD Network will very much miss him.

SustainableUMD represents the University of Maryland’s commitment to advance sustainability through teaching, research, service, and operations. The UMD Office of Sustainability celebrates these efforts through the SustainableUMD newsletter, website, social media, and more.
