As responsible armed citizens, a fundamental component of our skill set with a rifle or a pistol is being able to put bullets where they need to go on demand. Marksmanship, or the ability to consistently place accurate rounds on target, is a skill that needs to be over developed to the point where it is always available regardless of environmental or physical conditions.
A good gauge of effective markship with a pistol is shooting a fist-sized or tighter group for a full magazine of your pistol at 15 yards with a draw + shot for each round fired. These rounds should all be in the "upper A zone" of a USPSA target. For a rifle, try doing the same at 50 yards standing for 15-20 rounds starting each shot from the "hunt position" or a "low ready" position. Shoot these shots without time pressure. Despite starting each shot with a fresh presentation and sight picture, we should see a tight, concentric group on the target.
If after attempting the drills outlined above your target doesn't look roughly like the target at the top of the email, focus on the fundamentals of marksmanship until you can achieve this result. This means learning and then more importantly applying correct stance, grip, sight picture and pressing the tigger such that the sight picture remains proper until after the trigger breaks.
All of these fundamental skills can be trained in dry-fire practice provided that we have the visual disciple to know exactly where the sights are when the trigger breaks. This is considerably easier with a red dot on the weapon. Using 1 inch post-it notes down a long hallway or across a room work very well as an aiming reference. Dry-fire is the best, most time efficient and cost effective way of over developing your marksmanship hard skills.
Consistently executed marksmanship is the foundation for every other drill that is shot in training and for tactics that are executed in the real world. In training or competition, not being able to accurately place rounds on target will net you penalty workouts, lost points, and a place at the bottom of the leaderboard. In the real world, not being able to accurately place rounds on target makes you a liability to your team, family, friends, tribe, and community.
