    • Friday, November 4th from 6-8 pm. Come see the house, learn about its systems and its residents, and get ideas for how you can reduce your environmental footprint at home too. 21680 Woodland Road.

    • Michigan Tech's Sustainability Demonstration House is a residential learning environment where student tenants support sustainable living through technologies, social support, and community outreach and engagement. Tenant applications to live in the SDH for the 2023/2024 academic year are open. We are looking for sustainably-minded students with a passion for the environment who are ready to make a positive impact in our community.   • Enter the Social Sciences Sticker Design Contest! $50 cash prize awards for each winning design!
    • We need Dept of Social Science themed stickers: The goal is to have stickers for each of our degree Programs - Anthropology; History; Sustainability Science; Policy, Law, & Society; Policy & Community Development; Social Sciences. Create one design that could work for any program or make an individualized design! Simple sketches to print-ready copies will be accepted.

  • Dr. Jonathan Robins just won the Jerry Bentley Prize for Best Book in World History by the American Historical Association for his book entitled Oil Palm: A Global History.  The Jerry Bentley Prize is awarded annually to the best book dealing with global or world-scale history, with connections or comparisons across continents.

Social Scientists in Action
  • Students and faculty from our department attended and presented at the Global and Community Engagement Conference this past weekend. Presenters included Dr. Henquinet, Maya Klanderman, Jenna Messer, Dr. Val Gagnon, Jennifer Rachels, Courtney Archambeau, Dr. Winkler, Ben Wireman, Isadora Mitchell, Dr. Rhodes, Dr. Hannum, Janelle Freeman, Clare Fidler and many others. The theme of this conference was Re-energizing Our Communities Through Service.
  • Dr. Don Lafreniere presented at a joint meeting of the Keweenaw Chamber of Commerce and Main Street Calumet about how GIS can be used to support heritage preservation and economic development.
Student Ambassador Spotlight
Our first student ambassador spotlight is for our Sustainability, Science, & Society Ambassador: Kellin Gässer! Kellin is a second year Sustainability Science and Society Major with a minor in Sustainable Bioproducts! Their hobbies include crocheting, houseplants, & crystal collecting! Like all of our student ambassadors, Kellin is here to field any questions you may have about the Sustainability Science and Society major, the social science department, or anything else!!

  • Breaking news- the Nature Conservancy has acquired about 30,000 acres of Keweenaw County in the Keweenaw Heartlands sale! The TV 6 News Team reports "The Nature Conservancy (TNC) announced Thursday it has secured the protection of 31,600 acres in the Keweenaw Peninsula. Known as the Keweenaw Heartlands, TNC closed on the acquisition of 22,700 acres from The Rohatyn Group (TRG) and has entered into a purchase agreement for an additional 8,900 acres. That deal is scheduled to close by the end of the calendar year. TNC describes itself as a global conservation organization committed to building a future where people and nature both thrive."   • Call for Papers and Posters from the Vernacular Architecture Forum’s annual conference to be held in Plymouth, Massachusetts May 17-21, 2023. Here’s a good chance to engage with this organization before its annual conference comes to the Keweenaw in 2024! Deadline is Dec 19, 2022. Funds available for first-time presenters. Fall Department of Social Sciences Undergraduate Professional Development Mini-grant The Department of Social Sciences supports majors in our department, with the opportunity to enhance their research and professional development.

  • Grants of up to $500 per year are available to travel to a professional conference, apply toward research expenses, or any other activity that enhances professional development. This could include participating in a workshop or training program, learning a language, study away, working on a community project, or more. Another call to apply for this award will be announced in Spring.

"The Policy and Research Analyst will work closely with the Policy Director & Research Director on all aspects of policy analysis, research, political education, and Policy & Research team efforts to support our organizing goals." Undergrad:

Dr. Angie Carter is recruiting an hourly research assistant to help with local food systems research for spring semester 2023. Responsibilities will include assisting with community-based research projects in collaboration with the Western UP Food Systems Collaborative such as farm-to-school expansion planning and evaluation, conclusion of a community photovoice project, and other emergent needs. The RA will gain experience working with community partners, in data collection, and in data analysis.

This position is open to a graduate or undergraduate student who can commit to at least 5 hours and as many as 10 hours per week. These hours are flexible and will be scheduled around existing commitments. The student could start as soon as November 2022 or wait to begin at the start of the spring semester in January 2023. Hourly wage is $19/hour.

Interested students should email Dr. Carter at ancarter@mtu.edu by November 14 explaining their interest. Though previous experience is not required, interested students should mention any existing training or experience that prepares them for the position. Please contact her with any questions. She has weekly student hours on Mondays from 11-12 via Zoom and is glad to connect to talk more then or to schedule an alternate time.
