Qualifier Registration FAQs

All of the questions and answers below can be
found on our website as well!

Register For Qualifiers Here
1. Do we have to pick three events?

Yes, all teams need to choose three events that you could attend. In the past, this had to include a December option. This year there is only one option in December, so you can choose ANY three events.

2.  Do all team members have to attend? Is the team disqualified if someone can't make it?

It is best to have the whole team, and have all members participate in the judging and the robot game.  But if members cannot attend, that is not a disqualification, nor does it count against the team in any way. Other members will need to fill in, so it is good to make sure they are ready for this.

3.  We are a rookie and need more time. Can we have priority in a later event?

We have many rookie teams, even rookies with veteran team numbers.  We cannot give any team more time, in spite of a later start or new coach.  Remember that all teams at any given event may have similar situations.

4.  What happens if one of the coaches cannot attend an event?

As long as you have two adults both of whom have signed Consent and Release forms, with the team you are ok.

5.  Who assigns the teams, and how?

Members of the MD FLL Committee representing the Program Development Organization for Maryland assign teams to optimize assignments, and in the past a majority were assigned  choice 1, or choice 2.  As long as you register by the deadline, you have an equal chance at attending your first or second choice.  There is space to indicate requests on the registration.

6.  What happens if we want to change our assigned event?

Requests can be directed to
fll@umbc.edu.  The process involves coordinating over 200 teams and 13 host sites. Changes will not be considered because a team is 'not ready', has a member who has a conflict with another extracurricular activity or is on vacation.

7.  Is there more than one option for teams who cannot compete on Saturday for religious reasons?

There is one Sunday event this year, January 22, 2023. Note your situation in the comments.

8.  How will the remote option work?

Teams who cannot or do not desire to participate in person should choose the remote event, which will be conducted entirely on line, with some video submissions. This is similar to last season.  Based on the demand, further details will be shared. Teams who qualify from this event for the State Championship will be expected to attend that event in person.

9. Can we get more time to register?

With events starting on December 17th, we need to have teams complete their registration by Monday, October 31 if at all possible to ensure our tournament hosts can prepare and start to communicate with teams. In case of unusual circumstances, contact
fll@umbc.edu directly with your team number and reason you are unable to do so.  Realize that assignments will be made the week of October 31, and options may be limited when registering after the deadline.

10.  Why does the registration ask if our team is affiliated or sponsored by a tournament director?

Some tournaments, usually those with a large number of teams that are connected in the some way with the host, can request that those teams be assigned first (if it is their first choice) to that tournament.  Your team would know if this is the case.

11.  When will we know our assignments?

Assuming the majority of teams complete the request, the committee will work to optimize assignments within a week.  This is not an automated process, and we expect a number of teams to require us to work through late registration and other obstacles! Thanks for your patience.

12. How do I unsubscribe?
