Joseph Ivacic believes art is about engaging the viewer and providing an experiential moment.  He replicates objects that are content loaded and shifts the narrative by changing their traditional material. Ivacic entices in his audience by leaving subtle clues and details that provide hints to viewer that the sculptures are not found object art. His art combines imagery, text, and vocabulary within his forms to make statements about his point of view. Joseph Ivacic’s social commentary through his artwork is about his experiences, bringing awareness, and championing the efforts to creating equality for all.

Chicago artist Joseph Ivacic is part of a movement changing the perception that glass is not just a fine craft material but a sculptural medium worthy to be recognized as fine art.  While getting his BFA at the University of Illinois, Ivacic first explored this material in the late 1990’s and within 10 years was showing at international art fairs. Joseph’s achievements range from the Rosenberg Residency at Salem State University, to being commissioned to create an installation at the mezzanine level of 200 South Wacker Dr. and at Rush Hospital in Chicago. As an artist, he is most driven by the inclusion into museum shows, especially an upcoming show at the Wadsworth Atheneum.  Ivacic said, “I was originally drawn to technical characteristic of glass and my vocabulary with it. Now my focus is using glass’s fragile properties to provoke engagement with my work.”  Joseph Ivacic’s use of an unconventional material, in an uncertain time, is delivering art with a socially conscious.

November 4, 2022

As artists, we have the opportunity to create works that can synthesize our cultural timeline with emotion. The works we make can help process the complex conversations we face as a society through the voice of visual art, poetry, and movement.  For the month of November, newARTSpace welcomes guest curator Cristian Andersson and the first exhibition organized by fsm. The exhibition Roe v. Wade: a Conversation Through Art  is a creative platform to share thoughts, perspectives, and histories, sometimes quite personal, other times factual or abstracted. Together, as an exhibition, this is a record of where we are as a society. And, it is part of a conversation about where we go from here.

The artists in this exhibition answered an open call placed by fsm. to share their viewpoints in whichever way they chose. The October issue of the fsm. arts journal (https://fsm.ink) serves as a companion to this exhibition.

For the opening reception, from 5 – 8pm on November 4th, there will be a poetry reading and movement performance. This show and the accompanying print issue were made possible through the generosity of newARTSpace to utilize their space, financial support from a grant from The Canary Fund, as well as community support, and the brave voices of the artist particpants.

newARTSpace is a non-commercial gallery. Visiting the galleries at newARTSpace is free and open to all.

MICKEY is pleased to present A Minor Survey, an exhibition of new work by Michelle Grabner. Consisting of painting, sculpture, and photography, this exhibition differs from the traditional model of a survey by bringing together bodies of work developed from the artist's 30 year career that were all produced contemporaneously. This will mark the artist’s first solo presentation in Chicago since 2013 as well as her first with the gallery. The exhibition will open with a reception November 4th 5-8pm and will continue until December 18th, 2022.
