Dear <<First Name>>,

We know people in Burnaby and the surrounding communities can face challenges finding access to health care when they need it most. This is why I am excited to be part of the announcement earlier this morning that a new Urgent and Primary Care Centre (UPCC) at Unit 102-4555 Kingsway will open next week in my riding!

It was a pleasure being invited to the ceremony today and it's even more of a pleasure to say that with our joint efforts, the province of BC is stepping towards a future with quality healthcare for all.

Another exciting new I would like to share is that David Eby will be sworn in as British Columbia’s 37th premier by Lieutenant Governor Janet Austin on Friday, November 18!

Eby's team will help him transition and deliver results for people on some of the biggest challenges facing the province: “My transition team will be led by remarkable people who bring decades of experience along with new insights and perspectives from across the non-profit and private sectors,” Eby said. “With a team that brings new ideas from outside government but also understands how Victoria works, we can get results on the big challenges people in British Columbia are facing. I’m excited to have such a talented team beside me as we get to work for people.”

Here are some things I'd like to share with you from the past week:

Historic changes to B.C. child-welfare laws lay path to upholding Indigenous jurisdiction

B.C. is changing provincial legislation to remove barriers for Indigenous Peoples exercising jurisdiction over child and family services, becoming the first province to expressly recognize this inherent right within provincial legislation. The amendments will respect the inherent rights of Indigenous communities to provide their own child and family services and to keep Indigenous children safely connected to their cultures and their communities.

“We know that the current child-welfare system is a continuation of harmful colonial practices, and the solution is to re-assert jurisdiction over their children, youth and families in accordance with their customs, traditions and Indigenous laws,” said Mitzi Dean, Minister of Children and Family Development. “These amendments are a significant step in the creation of an approach that properly respects the inherent rights and legal orders of Indigenous Peoples and reshapes the provincial laws to focus on the best interests of Indigenous children."

320 protection services officers will support safer workplaces for healthcare workers

We are taking steps to build safer workplaces for healthcare workers and patients by introducing a new security model across all health authorities, hiring more protection services employees and expanding funding to SWITCH BC. About 320 in-house protection services officers and 14 violence prevention leads will be hired and will help create a safer environment for staff and patients.

Ensuring healthcare facilities are free of violence will help recruit and retain healthcare workers and improve patient care and continuity.

Province accepting applications for multiculturalism grants

Racism is a systemic issue that has both intergenerational and direct impacts on Indigenous, Black and people of colour, and we are committed to working with all partners to tackle racism in all its forms. That is why we are providing $300,000 to support community projects that help reduce systemic racism and incidents of hate, as well as build capacity to address these issues in racialized communities. Each successful organization will receive as much as $5,000, and will give community organizations the funding they need to help build a safer, more equitable province that works for everyone.

B.C. making changes to advance hydrogen industry

People in B.C. want to fight climate change and better protect our environment, while supporting clean energy jobs and economic growth. said Bruce Ralston, Minister of Energy, Mines and Low Carbon Innovation. That is why we are bringing forward changes that will further advance the production and use of hydrogen, generating economic opportunities, reducing emissions and supporting the transition to clean energy.

These legislative changes enable further development of our growing hydrogen industry, and help our province transition away from fossil fuels to a cleaner, low-carbon energy system.
