For the younger children, ages 0 through kindergarten, the Nursery opens from 10 a.m. to 11:30 each Sunday in the white house.

Children in 1st through 5th grades and Young Friends worship with their families (and all of us) from 10 to 10:20 and then go to their classes with their teachers. 

We are still looking for one paid worker and one more volunteer for the Nursery.  Here is the job description for the paid position.

Enriching the Silence: A Worship Sharing Event

Sunday, October 30th, 12:15 pm

Ministry & Worship invites Friends to participate in an exploration of our core spiritual practice. This is an opportunity to examine and share our practices, desires, experiences, challenges and breakthroughs (however we define these things), as we navigate the silence and consider messages.  Our intention is to examine what we do now, and consider possibilities that might help make MfW more meaningful in exactly the ways we hope for and aspire to.

Please begin to ponder the territory we will explore. Here are some queries and thoughts for you to consider. You are warmly invited to join us. Contact Judith Goedeke via Breeze for more information.

Please note:  This will be a blended meeting.  The Zoom connection will be the same as the one for Meeting for Worship. Our technical hosts will try to create a more intimate space for discussion for those who meet in the meetinghouse.  While we will wear masks inside, social distancing may not be possible.  Please keep these factors in mind as you choose how to join in. 

What Happened in This Month's Meeting for Business?

Here are the draft minutes for our October 9 Meeting for Business. 
(Spoiler alert:  Here's what happened:)

In addition to updates from the Building Committee, Ministry and Worship committee, and the white house resident search committee, 

• we heard and discussed a first reading of the FY 23 Budget;
• we heard about a revised draft of a statement of Adelphi Meeting's commitment to anti-racism and a plan for second hour on October 23;
• we heard from Outreach and Fellowship Committee about a concern about how we live up to the commitments inherent in our four minutes about LGBTQIA+ inclusion, and the committee's plans to explore this concern in an upcoming second hour discussion; and
• we discussed a proposed minute from Peace and Social Concerns Committee's working group on Reproductive Justice.  (See below.)

Minute on Reproductive Justice

On Sunday, October 23, the working group on Reproductive Justice brought a revised minute to a Called Meeting for Business; the minute was approved. The working group offers this list of resources and actions that we can undertake support of the minute. The group meets on third Mondays at 7:30; the next meeting will be Monday 11/21. Ideas and participants are welcome, including on a drop-in basis. Are you in that "Middle Third" ?

.... definitely aged out of Young Adult Friends, but you’re not quite ready to move to the Friends retirement community?  And yet…maybe you’re hungry for a rich spiritual life and connections to other Friends in your stage of life? Apparently, you're not alone.  Some other Friends in that "middle third" are reaching out to find out who else is out there. They have few "hello, are you there?" questions on this form. (They promise they are not a cover for any nominating committee!)  If you're willing to mention your interest in connecting - and when that would be possible in your real life - please take a look at the response form. 

You know what they say:  "One minute you are young and wild, and the next you're into air fryers!"

Mutual Aid: A Friendly Approach

In this interactive workshop with Rashid Darden on Zoom, Friends will walk through the surprisingly colorful history of mutual aid. How do fezzes and tents connect with food pantries? What’s the difference between charity and true mutual aid? Find out! Friends will also learn skills necessary to begin their own mutual aid ministries in their local meetings. This workshop will be recorded. Land Reparations: A Journey of the Heart

A Pendle Hill webinar on Zoom. The land on which we live, work, and worship is land to which its original inhabitants belonged and from whom it was stolen. Acknowledging this systemic land theft is only a first step in healing the injuries a pervasive settler/colonist culture inflicted on Indigenous Peoples. We now have an opportunity to shift our consciousness from "we-them" to "we-us."  Here is the link for more information. Caution: "Don't Say Gay" Bill Now in Congress

Rep. Mike Johnson from Louisiana has introduced HR 9197 with 36 cosponsors from 24 states (none from Maryland, DC or Virginia). This is a broad bill to prevent the use of federal funds to schools, libraries, hospitals or government entities for hosting or promoting any program, event, or literature involving sexually-oriented material.  Rep. Johnson calls the bill the "Stop the Sexualization of Children Act."

Dreaming About Reparations

What would it be like, if reparations could actually happen?  For any big turn-the-ship-around social change, dreaming has to be part of the beginning.  Here are a couple of resources to peruse, if your mind is itching to open in some new directions.

• The Mennonites are trying something interesting - a "repair network" connecting local congregations across the country to share historic and current information, coach the early steps of action, and gather periodically to figure it all out together. This project focuses primarily on reparations to Indigenous communities.
• An article in "Yes!" magazine on the nature of dreaming as part of the architecture of change:  "dreaming creates the space to imagine not just what it would take to build the world we want, but also what that world looks like. 
• And in the same magazine, an article that catalogues a number of projects undertaken by local groups:  "When Reparations Grow from the Grassroots."   These two articles focus more on reparations to the descendants of enslaved people.

• Schedule an in-person meeting at Adelphi (whether indoors or outdoors, recurrent or one-time) send an email to our Clerk (clerk@adelphifriends.org) requesting the use of that space.  Review these guidelines prepared by the Clerk when we started opening the meetinghouse grounds to outdoor use.
