Hello from the beehive
This summer, our family took a road trip through Eastern Washington. Lake Chelan was lovely and the North Cascades were stunning, but along the way we stopped in a little town called Winthrop. At first glance, it seemed like the perfect place to stretch our legs, let the baby crawl around a bit, and enjoy our lunch. Then the bees descended. In two different parts of town, were were swarmed by bees (though to be fair, they may have been hornets or some other striped buzzing insect). We ended up running for the car and driving to a higher elevation to eat.
It wasn't a big deal, but the incident stayed with me. That night, I started jotting down some ideas in the Notes app on my phone and a few weeks later, I had a full-fledged, rather surreal short story. Written in the form of a series of online reviews, it tracks the strange transformation of an isolated honey farm—but to tell you any more would be spoiling it.
