 Each week, Charley Walters shares some interesting information surrounding either one of the films coming up at The Dreamland or Dreamland Drive-In, or provides some top notch recommendations on how to beef up your movie pedigree at home. (These films will be available via cable providers, streaming services, and often times, your local library).
NINA HOSS
Many of us are looking forward to the new film Tar (soon to arrive at the Dreamland), in large part because Cate Blanchett performs in the title role. But it’s also a rare big-screen opportunity for American audiences to see the acclaimed German actress Nina Hoss.
Hoss is known to American audiences primarily through her recurring role as a German intelligence agent in television’s Homeland, and she’s also appeared in the streaming series The Defeated. But in Germany, she has starred in many theatrical releases, most of which are little known in the United States. Here are four recommendations (all from the German director Christian Petzold, by the way).
Yella (2007) Hoss won two acting awards for her starring role in this thriller in which she portrays a woman separating from her husband and trying to find a new life among shadowy figures.
Jerichow (2008) The actress plays the female lead in this approximate re-make of the much-filmed The Postman Always Rings Twice, James M. Cain’s 1934 noir novel.
Barbara (2012) Here she stars as an East German woman who in 1980 finds herself in both personal and political intrigue.
Phoenix (2014) Hoss won three awards for her portrayal of a Holocaust survivor who was facially disfigured during the war, and is seeking out her husband in post-war Berlin.
Nina Hoss will also appear on television in the forthcoming third season of Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan.
