Game Day Preview: Huskies vs Dinos

It's the final weekend of the regular season and the Huskies are looking to head into the playoffs on a high note as they welcome the Calgary Dinos to Griffiths Stadium for their annual 5th-year game. The Dogs wrap up their schedule against the same opponent they faced to kick off the campaign and they're hoping for a similar result after blasting the Dinos 44-5 in Week 1.

The Huskies are also looking to rebound from a loss for the first time this year after having their bid for an unbeaten season spoiled by UBC last week. Meanwhile, it could be a record-setting day for starting quarterback Mason Nyhus, who comes in just 117 yards shy of the Dogs' single-season passing yards mark held by Kyle Siemens.

Kick off is scheduled for 1 p.m. on October 29. Watch on SaskTel channels 49/349, Telus Optik channels 997/998 (Alberta & BC), stream on CanadaWest.tv or listen on the HuskieFAN app.

Head-to-head:

  • All-time vs. Calgary: Saskatchewan is 36-56-2
  • Last 10 meetings: Saskatchewan is 4-6
  • Huskies 2022 record: 6-1
  • Last meeting: 44-5 Huskies win on Sep. 2, 2022 at McMahon Stadium
  • Next meeting: TBD

Memory Bank: Charlie Ringland

Welcome to a new feature that will appear regularly throughout the season. We asked an assortment of veteran Huskie players and a few coaches to share some of their football memories. This week, we're catching up with fourth-year defensive back Charlie Ringland.

Who was the first player you remember watching at any level?

It would have to be either Milt Stegall or Charles Roberts, two old Bombers.  As a kid, me and my mom always used to go to Bomber games and those were the guys at the time. Probably Charles Roberts the most because I was a running back. I met him once after a game.

What's the first game you can remember attending?

It would have been a Bomber game. I think they were playing Montreal or Toronto at the old Canad Inns Stadium. It was super fun. I was still young at the time. I was playing football but I was basically in my first year playing and I just remember how exciting it was watching these massive guys run on, all the fans screaming.

Is there a coach who's been especially influential to you?

The first coach that I really liked was when I was nine or ten. Coach Kent Wood coached our community team (Charleswood Broncos). I was good friends with his two sons so I lucked out having him and he's helped me along the way growing up. Really pushed me into football and even in high school he was still around a lot. He was probably my first coach that I really hit it off with.

When you first joined the Huskies, who showed you the ropes?

The first day I got here it was Jacob Solie, David's brother. He took me out for dinner and showed me around, so he helped me a lot. After that, there were so many guys. We're so close in that locker room and there was a lot of guys that helped out.

What was the adjustment like moving from Winnipeg to play here?

It took a while to really figure out but other than football, you don't have to do a whole lot. I lived in dorms my first year. You go to class, after class you come here and they basically take care of you until 9 p.m. and by the time practice is done, you go home, you go to bed. It took a while but it was a pretty easy adjustment because we got helped out so much as rookies. Guys were always looking out for you, taking you out for food and all that so it was tough but it wasn't anything too crazy.

Huskies mourn loss of Chase Bradshaw

The Huskie football family is mourning the loss of one of its own this week after the passing of former quarterback Chase Bradshaw at the age of 33.

Bradshaw, who was also a proud alumni of the Saskatoon Hilltops, was known as a tremendous teammate and an even better friend. On the field, he's remembered as a quiet but competitive leader with great athleticism and a cannon for an arm.

Chase etched his name in the Huskies and Canada West record books on October 12, 2012, with one of the great quarterbacking performances in program history, leading a 28-point fourth-quarter comeback in a 44-39 win over the Manitoba Bisons. Bradshaw's 38 completions in that game tied a conference record and broke the Huskies mark previously held by Doug Siemens. Both the completions and Bradshaw's 60 pass attempts remain tied for third all-time in Canada West history.

The HFA wish to extend their deepest sympathies to the Bradshaw family, his friends and anyone else who grieves his loss. Once a Huskie, always a Huskie. RIP Chase.

 Alumni tunnel for 5th-year game

It's time to pay tribute to our graduating players and we want our alumni there to help welcome the Huskies onto the field on Saturday!

With this weekend's clash with Calgary serving as our annual 5th year game, all alumni are invited to come out onto the field to form the tunnel as the 5th year players walk out for their final regular season home game. Any alumni who wish to take part are asked to gather before the game at the north end zone.

In addition, the hospitality tent will also be open to all alumni who wish to watch the game from there. Let's get out and show our Huskies some love as they get set to defend their Hardy Cup title!

Be a part of the Starting 24!

Starting 24 is simple. By giving a little bit, either monthly or yearly, together we can make a huge difference to give the Huskies the ability to compete each year for the Vanier Cup!

Reoccurring pledges are the best way for you to help us support the team!

  • The Starting 24 is the primary fundraiser for the Huskie football team. There are 24 starting positions on a football team and they each need to execute their job and work together for the team to be successful. The Starting 24 is the same, it requires that we all chip in a little bit to build a successful program.
  • Funds are used to solely benefit the team, either through scholarships or toward operations.
  • All donations are eligible for a tax receipt from the University of Saskatchewan.
  • Starting in September, anyone who signs up for the Starting 24 All-Canadian Level - a $24 per month donation - will also receive a complimentary Huskie football Yeti mug.
  • All-Canadian Level members who are football alumni will also receive their name on the name plate above your former number in the Huskies locker room.
