Week of October 24 - 28

All the world’s a stage,

And all the men and women merely players;

They have their exits and their entrances;

And one man in his time plays many parts…”

--from As You Like It by William Shakespeare

Dear Families,

The 8th grade performs their class play Much Ado About Nothing by William Shakespeare tonight and tomorrow night, and Sunday afternoon. As a comedy, the play draws much of its humor from its characters’ personalities and relationships. As in so many modern romantic comedies, there is a romance that develops out of antagonism and rivalry. However, the resolution and reconciliation of the play comes only after a serious crisis, one that almost ends in tragedy.

We are also approaching Halloween, a festival that explores the darker elements of the spirit world that underlies our physical world. We can take pleasure in putting on a mask and showing a new face to the world, maybe representing a different aspect of our personality that we usually hide away. We might choose to show our own shadow side, or something we fear in the world-- a demon, a criminal, a naughty elemental being. Or, maybe we decide to exaggerate our positive aspects, and represent a (super)hero, a royal figure, a good fairy.

The world in which we live has no shortage of sobering, dire conditions to face. Our continued survival on the planet itself seems to be in jeopardy, and the choices we make will determine to a large extent the future conditions of the Earth. In this election season, we have real decisions to make about representation and values, about freedom and responsibility. Continuing the Halloween theme, political parties eagerly portray their opponents as dangerous, untrustworthy, sinister figures bound to lead us to disaster, while our own candidate is a heroic or almost saintly version of themselves.

The exaggerated features of the Halloween mask enter in this way into our political process, exacerbating tensions and fears, and hardening antipathy towards the opposing side. It becomes ever more difficult to see a path towards reconciliation between opponents following an election. Even Shakespeare, we see in Much Ado, included one character who is left unredeemed at the end of the play. Harmony and accord are possible only where good will and benevolence are at the heart of our intentions.

Young children love to dress up and try on new characters and personalities. As adolescents, the development of the Self comes about through our interactions with those around us. Even in adulthood, we can continue to change and grow through a sense of playfulness and interest in our fellow human beings, and in the worlds of nature and of spirit. If we are to overcome the challenges we face, what better way forward than through Play, stemming from a childlike sense of wonder and reverence that we should exist in this world in the first place?

With warm regards,

Simon Frishkoff

Robin's Nest Nursery

This is one of the autumn songs which the Robin's Nest children sing happily while skipping and rustling through the leaves on the forest grounds.

Peach Blossom Nursey
The Peach Blossoms had their paper Jack-o-Lanterns sitting on the window sill, looking out at children play in the play yard. During our circle time we have been enjoying riding on our witches' broomsticks, being pumpkin kings and turning into scarecrows! Below is the song we sing.

Jack- o-Lantern, Jack-o'-Lantern
You are such a funny sight
As you sit there in the window
Looking out at the night
You were once a yellow pumpkin
growing on a sturdy vine
Now you are a jack-o- lantern
Let your candle light shine

Winter Sports sign-ups
HVS will be supporting its own boys varsity basketball team again this season.  Finally emerging from Covid restrictions, we will play our home games at our own gym for the first time in three years.  The team will practice and play home games at the newly renovated Hudson Middle School in Greenport.  This year's program will also offer a boys modified team. Coaches Charles Towe and Jason Middlebrook will be sharing the helm for both squads.  We will be sending out a more detailed update regarding tryouts and open gym schedules to families interested in participating in the basketball program this year.  Girls and boys in grades 7-12 are invited to come out for the teams.  Anyone interested in learning more please contact the coaches or me via email: ctowema@yahoo.com; jmiddlebrook9999@gmail.com; jgibbons@hvrising.com

With another season of our soccer mergers with Taconic Hills coming to a close, HVS will also be offering girls and boys in grades 9-12 the opportunity to participate in two new winter sports mergers with Taconic Hills.  For the first time ever we will be supporting our student athletes interested in competitive swimming and competitive bowling.  For more information please contact Taconic Hills Athletic Director Angela Webster or myself via email: awebster@taconichills.k12.ny.us; jgibbons@hvrising.com

THIS WEEKEND!

Maker's Market at Hawthorne Valley

October 29th from 10am - 4pm
We are excited to announce that Hawthorne Valley will be holding a monthly Maker’s Market at the pavilion outside the Farm Store. Our next market will be on October 29th from 10 am-4 pm! These monthly markets feature products made by Hawthorne Valley staff! We'd love to see you there!
Halloween is coming.... !
We are pleased to announce that this year Hawthorne Valley is bringing back the tradition of a Halloween Festival for families with young children that will be held on Monday October 31st , rain or moonshine, from 5:30 - 7pm. This will be the first time since the pandemic that we are holding this event.

In this offering, a magical community experience that shies away from ghoulish imagery is created. Families are invite to come in costumes that are simple and preferably home-made - not too scary since our littlest trick-or-treaters will also be in attendance. There will be a Jack-O-Lantern path to Baba Yaga's hut and bonfire. Children can visit Mother Earth, the Wizard of the Wood, a Fairy Garden, toast marshmallows at the bonfire, and also see a puppet play. This year our student troupe, The Acorn Players, will present "Witchamaroo" at 5:30, 6, and 6:30pm in the Kindergarten.

Tickets for the puppet play are $4 each or $10/family and will be on sale next week in TuRose. These will quickly sell out so advance purchase is recommended! Proceeds help cover costs of the festival event. Donations are also appreciated.

For more information, or if you would like to volunteer to help, please contact Caroline O'Neill in TuRose.
