We made it to Friday!  Spirit Month College and Field Days, Halloween Costume Contest, Día de Los Muertos Bake Sale, Winston United Celebration of Life, Parent-Teacher Conferences, and more.  But first, Spirit Month updates!

Today we wrapped up Spirit Month with an afternoon field day at Shores Park filled with games and competitions, including an obstacle course complete with a dress-up relay heat! Returning favorites included water carry, musical chairs, basketball, soccer, Frisbee golf, and water balloon toss competitions. An alternative option was available for those students needing a quieter activity. We will post the winners of this year’s competition in next week’s communication.

Earlier in the week, staff and students enjoyed wearing their college gear or team colors to score points for their teams.

We want to thank our Parent Group and all the parents who supported our student events all month long.  From donations of your time, talents, food, and equipment to the generous gift cards for supplies and prizes–all contributed directly to a positive impact on our students' social and emotional development and academic engagement.

Our families also showed tremendous support in our food drive, benefiting the San Diego Food Bank while students earned points for their teams.  We thank our teachers, Mr. Nunley and Ms. Kitty, for their multiple trips to drop off donations to the Food Bank.

The Winston School Student Council Halloween Costume Contest is on Monday, October 31, during a brief activity period assembly where students can model their costumes and everyone can cast their vote.

Costume contest categories:

  • Best Overall

  • Scariest

  • Funniest

  • Most Accurate/Realistic Character Depiction

Costumes should not inhibit the students' learning or the surrounding learning environment. All costumes still need to follow our school dress code policy in the 2022-23 Student and Parent Handbook linked here.

Weapons or excessive gore will not be permitted.

If you have questions about your costume meeting these requirements, please ask Mrs. Garrison or Mrs. S-T.

The Winston School Student Council is hosting a school-wide bake sale during break and lunch on Tuesday and Wednesday, November 1-2, in celebration of Día de Los Muertos.  Individual items will range in price from $.50 to $2.00 each and will benefit two winter social events planned for middle and high school students on Thursday, December 8.

In addition to the bake sale, Winston United is encouraging students and staff to bring mementos for our celebration of life or ofrenda table, honoring people in their lives who have passed.  Students may bring pictures or place names on popsicle sticks which we will provide.

Winston United is a group of students who advocate for diversity, multiculturalism, and educational equity.

On Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, November 1, 2, and 3, students may view the movie Coco during lunch in Room 2.

Interim Head of School Mary Sterling-Torretti joined parents on Monday, October 24, for “Muffins with Mary,” sponsored by the Parent Group.  We look forward to offering future dates and times of day for this opportunity to engage in an informal question-and-answer discussion and learn more about our school and our new school leadership.

Middle School Math Teacher Ms. Edwards visits with 11th grader Makena D. while she was working at Spirit Halloween.  Ms. Edwards reports that Makena was informative and knowledgeable about her job. Their smiles say it all!

Did you know we have many creative students on campus who would like to showcase their art and writing skills?  Students, submit your work to The Bulldog Social work along with this form to the Student Affairs Department for review and approval.  Please allow up to 5 school days for submissions to be reviewed.  Student works will be displayed near the front entrance display case.

Do you know a student who would benefit from a Winston transformative learning experience?  We are the only non-public, in-person diploma-bound program for students with learning differences in San Diego County.  We welcome students all year long with our rolling admissions policy.  Please visit our website to learn more and schedule a personalized tour to see how our innovative teaching methods set us apart while honoring students' strengths, embracing their differences, and becoming valued members of our community.

Saturday School continues tomorrow, October 29, 9:00 AM - 1:00 PM. Students, please enter through the front parking lot wooden gate outside Room 1. Parents are reminded of The Winston School 2022-23 Student and Parent attendance and make-up policy. You may find a copy of it here on page 7. Teachers will contact parents if your student’s attendance is required.
