US-China Decoupling: Implication for Innovation in the Asia-Pacific and Beyond

CBSI hosted a research seminar “US-China Decoupling: Implication for innovation in the Asia Pacific and Beyond”, Aug 16, 2022 5PM-6:30PM Pacific Time (US and Canada). It featured veteran scholars (Peter Ping Li, Mary Teagarden and Roger Chen) and an industry expert (Ker Gibbs, the former President of the American Chamber of Commerce in Shanghai), moderated by Liang Wang. Scholars from around the world attended the seminar with the major economies in the Asia-Pacific region well represented.

Launch of Asian Business Leader Research Program

As part of the Center for Business Studies and Innovation in Asia-Pacific research program, Professor Roger Chen, Chair of Asia Business Leaders Research Program at the Center, commissioned by the Center advisory board Chairwoman and the USF Trustee Nora Wu, and Professor Keith Hunter, Member of the Center’s Research Committee launched the interview series on July 7th, 2022, with Dr. Victor Fang, Co-founder and CEO of AnChain.AI, a Silicon Valley company focusing on AI-Powered Blockchain Intelligence Platform for Security, Risk, and Compliance. In the interview, Dr. Fang discussed his philosophy and advice on how to view and manage Asian identity in entrepreneurship activities, his leadership style, his company's strategy in dealing with and winning the competition as well as how the company prioritizes resource allocations in product development decisions, etc. This is the first in a series in our extensive studies of Asian business leaders in Silicon Valley, and other parts of the US. This is the first endeavor in the country to systematically research Asian business leaders and entrepreneurs in their journey to successes and challenges facing them as well as the contributions they bring to mainstream society.

On November 16, CBSI-AP will partner with the National Committee on US-China Relations for its annual CHINA Town Hall event at Lone Mountain 100. The event will begin at 4PM with a live telecast of an interview with Jon Huntsman, former Ambassador to Russia, China, and Singapore. At 5PM, Professor Peter Lorentzen will moderate a discussion of how the evolving US-China relationship is affecting the Bay Area and the tech sector, featuring China tech sector analyst Rui Ma and CBSI's Executive-in-Residence, seasoned China business executive Ker Gibbs. Doors will open at 3:30 PM, and drinks and appetizers will be served.

Awards and Recognition

We are happy to announce and congratulate the CBSI-AP Executive Board Members, Professors Roger Chen and Xiaohua Yang, as well as CBSI-AP Affiliate Faculty Members William Wei and Zaiyang Xie, on winning the award for the Best Case written in Chinese language “Dahan Group: Develop New Business” at the NACRA 2022 Annual Conference.

The NACRA Annual Conference is a unique opportunity to engage with other leading case researchers in a small-group format. The case study illustrates how Dahan, a Chinese telecom company, built up the new B2B e-commerce business and its practices in leveraging and sharing resources/capabilities and cross-department and cross-division collaboration.

The submission of “Dahan Group: Develop New Business”, was acknowledged at the awards ceremony on October 8, 2022 at the Sheraton Fallsview Hotel, Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada.
