Board Leadership Calgary 2022 - Board Basics 101

Saturday, November 5 at 10:30 am. The Board Basics 101 is a foundational workshop that teaches you everything you need to know to begin your work as a board member! First, you'll learn about the board’s role in leading a not-for-profit, with key topics around leadership, accountability, and governance responsibilities. Then they will discuss common matters that apply to all boards, regardless of how different your not-for-profits can sometimes appear to be, so you’ll be able to go back and have a better understanding on what to do, how to settle in with the team, and how to prioritize what’s most important.

2022 - Fund Development That's Built to Fit

Saturday, November 19 from 10:30 AM – 12:00 PM

Bring your fund development questions and challenges! This interactive session will start with a conversation about you: your organization’s experiences with fundraising and your biggest areas of need.

Gail helps organizations build fundraising programs that fit, and in this workshop, she will lead you through conversations about fundraising fears, challenges and successes. The workshop will include some coaching ‘in real time’ on needs identified by the participants on the call, with learnings and best practices that can be tailored to fit your organization whether your fundraising program is just getting going or has been active for years. Expect to leave this session some tried and true tactics and templates that you can put to work as soon as you get back to your desk on Monday.

Skills Exchange for Good

The Canadian government has embarked on a bold plan over the next decade, which will remove 530,000 families from housing need, cut chronic homelessness by 50% and change the face of housing in Canada forever. The National Housing Strategy isn’t just about policy change. It’s about people working together across sectors to build better lives, create stronger communities and lend a helping hand to people in need. The Skills Exchange for Good program is doing just that.

Since 2020, Volunteer Canada has been testing a model of skills-based volunteering. The pilot project, formerly called the Business Advisory to Support Affordable Housing, connected the skills of companies with the needs of non-profits addressing affordable housing, culminating in a two-hour virtual expert consultation that provides business advice to a specific organizational issue. CIBC, Enbridge, and Meridian Credit Union took part in the pilot by providing funding and engaging their own skilled employees in projects.

This series is intended for Corporate Citizenship professionals working in businesses to advance their corporate community engagement programs by learning about the current global themes in corporate volunteering, and what the future might look like.

Lethbridge Family Services 30th Annual Angel Tree Christmas Campaign

The Angel Tree Christmas Campaign is around the corner! When the shelves were literally bare last year and hundreds of children still needed gifts, the outpouring of generosity from our community inspired us to work harder. Last year the campaign reached 3,274 babies, children, and youth. It was a big number, and we are worried it will grow, as more families feel the weight of our current economic climate.   To contribute to Angel Tree:
  1. Purchase gifts directly: Drop off your unwrapped new toy to us or any official Drop Off Location listed on our website
    www.lfsfamily.ca
  2. Make a donation: Visit our website to make an online donation: https://www.canadahelps.org/en/charities/lethbridge-family-services/

SHENLA Calls for Collective Action to Address Child & Family Poverty in Lethbridge & Area

A recent report by SHENLA highlights that child and family poverty is an important issue in Lethbridge and area. This report was funded by the City of Lethbridge and the Government of Canada and prepared by HelpSeeker in collaboration with SHENLA. While rates of poverty have declined somewhat over the last twenty years, children 0-5 years of age continue to experience higher rates of low income across age groups. This presentation will explore which groups of children are differentially affected by poverty in our community, the impacts of poverty, and why action is needed. Child poverty is associated with a cascade of negative impacts over the life course, and a variety of negative impacts at a community level.
Recommendations for urgent action are identified. What is the City of Lethbridge’s strategy to address poverty? The speaker will argue that a collective impact approach with broad community participation and municipal support is required to address and end child and family poverty in our community.
Speaker: Sharon Yanicki PhD (2022)

Date: Thursday November 3, 2022. Presentation begins at 12 & concludes at 1 p.m.
Cost: Free, but donations are gratefully accepted
Location: Lethbridge Senior Citizens Organization (LSCO) Dining Room, 500-11 Street S, Lethbridge, AB

International Volunteer Managers Day
November 5, 2022

“Many Backgrounds – One Profession – Stronger Together”

This theme conveys a strength the volunteer leadership sector possesses that we don’t draw on enough… the huge and diverse range of backgrounds that volunteering leaders come from.

On one hand – we come from a wide range of professional backgrounds. We are also made up of people from all walks of life and different cultural backgrounds.

We believe that this diversity of backgrounds should allow us to think differently, we can find solutions together when we come at issues from different perspectives. As we all have different skill sets we should be able to collectively collaborate and use more these more productively.
