The picture below illustrates what it felt like when I was building my first guitar!! I had Cumpiano's book and a box of lumber from Luthiers Mercantile International. When I opened the box I knew I was in trouble!.It was just a box of dimensioned lumber! Nothing was done except the rosette, bindings and kerfing! I had to do it all!  The internet was just getting started and the only information available was a website from David Schramm called the Online Apprentice and Frank Ford's site, frets.com I remember spending hours on these sites trying to figure things out.  There really wasn't much information available to help those wanting to learn lutherie.  Fortunately, I was able to find someone that was willing to teach me how to build a guitar. Without the help of Brazilian luthier, Antonio Tessarin, I would not have been able to do it.
Fast forward 25 years and there is a lot more information available theses days than what was available to me. Some of it is good and some of it is complete garbage! You still have to sift through it to find the useful information. When I began teaching a university level lutherie course at a college in Colorado I decided to do something about the lack of information available. Over the last 20 years I have been creating lutherie instructional materials to help those that find themselves in the same predicament that I was all those years ago. This has resulted in hundreds of hours of online courses presented by myself and some of the world's most renowned and respected luthiers. All of these course are available on the recently launched Lutherie Academy website. It has never been easier to learn lutherie! So, please take advantage of all the materials that myself and others have put together. It has taken us many years to develop our skills and we are willing to pass them along to others. All you have to do is follow along as we teach what we have learned.
Happy Building!
