"... In that tense election (1884) the main point was that there was voting at all, for the right to choose our lawmakers was what made America, America...." -- historian Heather Cox Richardson

Read her entire post from November 8, 2022, including the remarkable poem by Walt Whitman HERE.   For more about Richardson, read HERE.

A Critical and Timely Request from our Friends at
Mountain True:

We're in the home stretch of the 2045 Comprehensive Planning process.  In a nutshell, if we don't have strong land-use policies in place, suburban sprawl will leapfrog its way out into our open space and ruin the rural character that we cherish. Read MtnTru's analysis of the draft here: ANALYSIS.

Time is short. MtnTru is looking for letters-to-the-editor writers, public-input speakers, emails to commissioners, and warm bodies to just show up to meetings:  If you are willing to write and/or say whatever resonates with you about the future of Henderson County or maybe find a topic within MtnTru's analysis, short and sweet will do the trick. For help or more details, contact Nancy Diaz at nancy@mountaintrue.org

Commissioner meetings are on Wed. Nov 16th (time and place TBD) and Dec. 5th at 5:30 in the Historic Courthouse. The Planning Board will meet to approve the draft plan on Thursday, Nov. 17th at 5:30 in the 100 N King St meeting room.

The LWVHC Nominating Committee has begun the work of developing a slate of officers for the 2023 elections, and you will vote on that slate at our Annual Meeting next June.
We are seeking candidates for Officers and the Board. Whether you are new to the membership or a seasoned member, we hope you will contact us if you would like to be considered. Email the nominating committee co-chairs through this email address.

Show your League pride.
Order now for you or your family members---a great holiday gift!

Lobbying vs Advocacy

As an organization with a 501(c)3 designation with the IRS, our members may want to understand the difference between advocacy and actual lobbying activities and communications taken by the League.  This in no way effects the activities or communications taken by individual members.

Here is a simple explanation:

  • All lobbying is advocacy, but not all advocacy is lobbying.
  • If a communication makes no reference to specific legislation or ballot measure, it is not lobbying; it is advocacy.
  • Providing information on issues is not lobbying; it is advocacy.
  • Lobbying is measured in dollars spent, not in hours of volunteer time.
  • Any significant state-level lobbying is paid for by LWV-North Carolina, which is a 501(c)4 and does not have the same IRS status as a 501(c)3.
