Dear <<First Name>>,
Welcome to our October Newsletter.
NB: We have also issued the newsletter via LinkedIn, so apologies if you get this twice. Please manage this with your subscription preferences.
I have been quiet for the last few months as I've been doing some coaching on finding my voice with the amazing Jaqueline Nagle and we've been steadily building the InnoWise™ app portal (thanks to Big Carl Software). Exciting times!
Immersive Learning at Melbourne Water
We have kicked off the next stage of work with Melbourne Water - helping them plan and manage the next phase of the Immersive Centre's development towards commercialisation. The Centre uses Virtual Reality (VR) based training for confined space training, snake bite training, and now to simulate rescue during an electrical incident. This initiative is a great example of innovation at it's best: with Deakin University as key collaborators and having a strong driver behind it - keeping people safe. In their next phase, they will be looking for potential customers. So, if you'd like to learn more, we would love to hear from you.
The Why behind InnoWise™
In finding my voice, I have realised why I am so passionate about innovation and helping people innovate. It is because of my early adult years, where I was witnessing the earth being destroyed by humans. Because of that I studied engineering so I could help reduce our impact on the environment. Then, after 20 years of practicing, I became curious to find out why it was so hard to move great ideas into reality. Going back to Uni, for my third degree, resulted in the creation of the InnoWise™ framework.
And here we are today, needing innovation, more than ever, to save our planet. And with the InnoWise™ framework and tools, my mission is to help fix the planet, one innovation at a time. Similarly, my co-founder Joeri (Yuri) is passionate about helping others do the right things at the right time and capturing that all important new knowledge to enhance capability growth.
Then, after 20 years of practicing as an engineer, I became curious to find out why it was so hard to move ideas (great or otherwise) into reality. Going back to University for my third degree, I learned that managing knowledge as an asset and understanding it has behaviours was key to the success of innovation.
The importance and power of knowledge
Knowledge is an illusive, yet powerful asset. It is vital to manage knowledge so we do not repeat mistakes and so our capability grows. The following example is from the water industry that we can all relate to, to illustrate the importance and power of knowledge.
An important innovation that the water industry did and celebrates was introducing the first sewers into London in the 19th century. While it was an innovation for that community at that time, it certainly wasn't the first.
The Romans were doing this over 2000 years ago. It is estimated that the first sewers of ancient Rome were built around 500 BC. An example is at Hadrian’s wall ruins showing a latrine which uses a rainwater tank for flushing the waste away. They were also good at stormwater harvesting.
This knowledge was lost through the dark ages and civilised society had to go through much stench and disease because this knowledge was lost. And, even though there was much death caused by human waste - the engineers had to plead to the powers that be that they should invest in this new way of doing things:
“ your MONEY or your LIFE”
I can't help but wonder:
What would our world be like if we had not lost that knowledge?
This example, shows how knowledge can power innovation and the power of knowledge.
Changing our ways and our habits is hard. Understanding what friction might get in your way is vital to assure success. By using tools and measures that uncover this friction will provide valuable insights before your projects go off the rails and so, will save money, time and resources. Your projects will be more likely to succeed and then your management and board will be more likely to support innovation to address change - and maybe, saving it from a potential, untimely demise.
And by being more successful and taking full advantage of that new knowledge, we can fix the planet - one innovation at a time.
Announcing: Launch of the InnoWise™ App portal
The new InnoWise™ portal provides a dashboard for your organisation to share each project's Knowledge Canvas and Pulse results. Each aspect of the Canvas is entered via the app. The app provides an easy export to a pdf. Contact us now for a demo.
