From the Principal

He mihi maioha, Faa-talofa atu, Greetings,

Congratulations to all our students who were acknowledged at the Senior Prize Giving.  It was a lovely event, recognising achievement in all areas during the course of this year.  The top two academic awards went to Anna McKey, Dux, and Keira Worthington, Proxime Accessit (runner up to the Dux).  You will see in the prize list the wide range of awards and how highly we value commitment to our Special Character, diligence, and service.

This was also a chance to farewell officially and thank the staff who are leaving - Mrs Jill White who retires after 10 years at Marian supporting Learning Support and assisting many students to gain essential skills and confidence.  Ms Georgia Dickson, who after teaching Science, Health and Physical Education for the year, heads off for her long-awaited OE, and plans to teach whilst she is away.  Matua Jacob Keelty, who began his teaching career at Marian, teaching Maths and Te Reo Māori.  He now heads to Shirley Boys High School to use his talents teaching Music.  We have particularly appreciated his support of the Kapa Haka group and his highly competitive approach to basketball coaching.

This week we have begun our Phone Free trial at school, following overwhelming support from the survey of parents.  We do understand the differing points of view, but I would have to say there is a noticeable positive difference already.  There is more talking, laughing, and playing of games at interval and lunchtime than ever before.  Teachers have also noticed a change in the degree of focus and engagement in class.  We will survey the students and staff for their responses at the end of the term. Anecdotally though, this seems to be a very positive move, and that is also backed up by the experience of schools who have made this change.

Enjoy Show Weekend - a much-loved Canterbury tradition!

With faith in our future,

Mary-Lou Davidson (Mrs)
Principal

Special Character

Thanksgiving Leavers' Mass
Saints and Souls
November is a month when the Catholic Church celebrates those who have passed away and the communion of saints. Our love for those who have passed away never dies and we remember them particularly this month.
We also celebrate all those holy men and women who have touched the lives of many and celebrate those living out Jesus in the world and who remind us of our destination which is heaven.  As St Theresa of Lisieux said beautifully “The world is your ship and not your home”.

Let us remember all those who have passed away from our Marian whānau, especially Mrs Jane Dickie who touched the lives of many students in her role here as Guidance Counsellor.

“Eternal rest grant unto them oh Lord and let perpetual light shine upon them, may their souls rest in peace Amen.’
We are praying for...
We remember students, staff, and members of our Marian College community who are currently in hospital or unwell.

We also remember students, staff, and their families who have lost loved ones recently, especially the family of Isabella McKenzie (Year 10) - Grandmother.

Eternal rest grant to them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them.  May they rest in peace.  Amen

Congratulations

Congratulations to the following University Scholarship winners:
Leavers' Breakfast
Congratulations to Maddy Roberts who was awarded the Year 13 Trophy for commitment, perseverance and being a Marian student, voted on by her peers.  This award was presented last Wednesday at our Leavers' Breakfast held at Visions at ARA.  Beautiful farewells and reflections were given by Year 13 Dean, Ms Clare Kelly and as a parent, Carmel Gregan-Ford, as her children finish their education at Marian College.  Carmel's speech can be read here

Thanks to all those that attended to make this event special.  Students were also presented with their leavers' gift by Mrs Pip Grocott on behalf of Rauru.
SPACPAC Emerging Leaders' Breakfast
Recently, the SPACPAC Emerging Leaders' Breakfast was held at the University of Canterbury.  This is an annual event that is organised by the SPACPAC committee to bring together the education and Pasifika communities to inspire and celebrate Pasifika identity, language, and culture.  This year the Pasifika Leaders' Breakfast was honoring Pasifika students who have demonstrated leadership and service at the highest levels in their respective schools.  It was a pleasure to attend this event along with Ms Clare Kelly (Year 13 Dean), Maria Ilalio, Lydia Iosefo, and their families.

Maria and Lydia were recognised as our Marian College recipients of these SPACPAC leadership awards this year, and both were very deserving given how much they have contributed in their respective leadership roles.  Maria and Lydia were both on stage multiple times during our recent senior prizegiving, and it was wonderful to see their many gifts, talents, and hard work being acknowledged throughout the evening.  I am also proud to share that they have each received scholarships to support them in their future tertiary studies.  Lydia is going to study a Bachelor of Design at Ara in 2022, and Maria is heading to the University of Otago to study Health Science.  We congratulate them both for their outstanding achievements in 2022 and wish them all the best in their future endeavours.
Mrs Kalina Harmer-Campbell
Pasifika Co-ordinator
Winner of the Catholic Diocese of Christchurch Commission for Justice and Peace essay Year 9-10:  Stella Jones
When Stella Jones heard about the competition from her Religious Education teacher, Mrs Sylwia Smiarowska, she thought it would be a good thing to use her talent as a writer to address a difficult but important issue here in New Zealand - racism.  “I have friends who are of different cultures and thought they might experience racism” says Stella.  The topic for the Year 9-10 category was “Describe a time when an act of racism has been recognized in Aotearoa.  How can Catholic Social Justice Teaching prevent future similar events”.  Stella chose to write about the Mosque attack in Christchurch in 2019 and how this event ‘shook New Zealand as a whole’.  With great skill and empathy, she focuses on Catholic Social Justice teachings in her essay which she says “at the basis of being a good human being - they are values which everyone should apply.”

Congratulations Stella!

School Life

Year 8 Orientation
We welcomed our new entrants recently to a very busy day indeed!  They completed a rotation activity and visited different areas around the school.  They came in groups to be introduced to the Special Character of Marian College.  They learned that a Special Character school assists in the mission of the church in living out Jesus’ teachings.  Our Year 12 helpers shared with them how we live our faith and action it out through St Vincent De Paul donations, Social Justice activities, and liturgies throughout the year.

Students also participated in some Peer Support introductory activities with our Year 12 students.  They also enjoyed a Science activity and completed some testing.  It was lovely to see students begin to get to know each other.  Thanks to Mrs Julie Blackwell for her organisation around this day.

We are looking forward to these students joining us next year and know that our Marian whānau will make them feel at home here.
Gumboot Friday
The Marian Community participated in 'Gumboot Friday' which is a fundraising event to raise money for free counselling services for New Zealand rangatahi under age 25.  Since 2021, Kiwis have donated $3.3 million to fund free kids' counselling and at the time of printing, Gumboot Friday has funded 20,481 counselling sessions, helping 9,376 Kiwi kids.  Thanks to everyone who got involved and donated to this very important cause.

Important Information

Cell Phone Trial Update
So far we are really pleased with the results of our cell phone trial.  Our junior students are so busy at morning tea and lunchtime and it is clear they are engaging more with each other.  Students (some secretly) have acknowledged they are enjoying less pressure and more talking.  We will continue to keep you updated on progress.
Student Leadership
Applications are now closed for all leadership positions for the College in 2023. Shortlisting has been completed and students have been notified.  Interviews for Head Students will take place on Wednesday 7 December 2022.
NCEA Examinations
Senior students have begun their NCEA examinations and are now on study leave The NCEA external examinations run from Monday 7 November to Friday 2 December.  Please click here to view the examination timetable.

External Examination sessions start at 9.30am and 2.00pm each day.  Please make sure students arrive at school in time to prepare themselves prior to starting each examination.  All students must also have their admission slip with them so please check that this hasn't been left at home.

It is essential that a student's study leave time is as productive as possible so please support students by providing a space for them to work quietly and by helping to reduce any other commitments they may have.  It is not too late to make a significant difference in the results achieved!
StudyIt
StudyIt is a useful resource, provided by the Ministry of Education, to support students in their preparation for their examinations in English, Mathematics and Science at all three NCEA levels.  Students are able access a variety of study resources, ask questions and participate in online forums for additional support.  To access StudyIt, click here.
The NZQA website has some very helpful tips to manage exam pressure.

Technology Update
All students who have yet to return their loaned school devices, must do this by
Friday 25 November.
Lateness
We have noticed, and are very concerned, about the number of students arriving late to school each day.  Please ensure your child catches a bus that is appropriate to the time required to get to school, or leaves earlier in order to be on time.  Students will receive detentions if they are late more than twice per week or on a Wednesday.  Lateness and attendance can be checked by you as parents via the portal at any time.
Library Book Return
A reminder that seniors need to return books as soon as possible.  All senior issues, except study guides, were due on 21 October 2022.

Juniors have until Thursday 10 November 2022 for books to be issued and then all returned by Friday 2 December 2022.
Service
A reminder to all parents that at least six hours of meaningful service per year is asked of all students at Marian College.  Our expectations regarding service are that students are giving up their own time to provide this.  Please note that students are not permitted to return to their primary schools to provide service when they are required to attend school at Marian.  Only arrangements made directly through the school to our sports department will be considered as a justified absence.  Please be aware of this in the future and we ask that Teacher Only Days are the days used to assist.
Uniform
Students are required to wear their blazers to and from school every day.  This is a compulsory requirement of our uniform.  On very hot days, the dress may be worn without the blazer.
