Chateau Cissac
Haut Medoc, Bordeaux

We are long and loyal supporters of the ever-reliable Chateau Cissac, finding it consistently in the upper echelon of cru bourgeois Bordeaux from the Haut-Medoc. This wine has become part of the fabric of Randall's for years, and even before this, Stuart Anderson founder of Balgownie used to love it and import it each year.  Cheers, Randall.

'I sometimes wonder whether the top Cru Bourgeois more faithfully represent the last refuge for wine lovers driven out of Bordeaux by the price of the classed growths' - Benjamin Lewin MW, Bordeaux

According to legend, one that is borne out by the existence of several ancient remains, the magnificent 18th century charterhouse that is the château Cissac of today was built on the remains of a Roman villa. What is in any case certain is that the château is home to a long established family tradition of cultivating the vine. Today the vineyards are managed by Marie Vialard, a direct descendant of Jacques Mondon who bought the estate in 1895, and Louis Vialard, who restored it to its former glory in the middle of the 20th century.

Cissac 2019 Haut Medoc Cru Bourgeois Superieur
RRP: $56 Offer: $46!

"This is a refined wine, elegantly structured and already showing a fine equilibrium between fruit and tannins. Its wood aging is also beginning to smooth the fruit's vibrancy. It has great promise and long-term aging." 94pts. -  Wine Enthusiast.

A deep, youthful purply colour leads into a rich and deep wine with lovely supple tannins and impressive length. - Randall

"Very pretty, ripe fruit with blackberries, sweet tobacco and some chocolate. Medium to full body and round, ripe tannins. A slightly softer style."
92-93pts - James Suckling

"The 2019 Cissac offers up aromas of plums, currants, sweet soil tones and cigar box. Medium to full-bodied, bright and concentrated, it displays fine-grained but assertive tannins, tangy acids and fine length on the finish. More polished than the chewy, frequently austere Cissac wines of yesteryear, it will nevertheless require a bit of patience." - William Kelly.

Cissac 2018 Haut Medoc Cru Bourgeois Superieur
RRP: $66 Offer: $56!

Wow, this is a dark and deeply flavoured ripe wine, that today seems richer and more opulent than the 2019. It’s solidly structured, full flavoured, mouthfilling and very long. - Randall

“This is a powerful Cissac with a dense core of purple fruit and graphite, as well as chewy tannins. Full-bodied. Rich finish. One of the best wines from here in years."
92-93 pts. - Jamessuckling.com.

This big wine from a great vintage has been aged in 40% new oak and that has been soaked up by the richness of this wine.

Cissac 2017 Haut Medoc Cru Bourgeois
RRP: $87 Offer: $74!

"The 2019 Cissac offers up aromas of plums, currants, sweet soil tones and cigar box. Medium to full-bodied, bright and concentrated, it displays fine-grained but assertive tannins, tangy acids and fine length on the finish. More polished than the chewy, frequently austere Cissac wines of yesteryear, it will nevertheless require a bit of patience." - William Kelley, The Wine Advocate\

The 2017 is a little lighter than these others, but if ever there was a benchmark / archetypal example of a “luncheon claret”, then this is it!
It is elegant, perfumed with cigar box, red berry, cassis liqueur, and sweet spice. The flavours are ripe and long, the structure fine-boned and wine is dynamic and pure. - Randall

"commendable Cissac that makes the most of the vintage."
90pts. - Vinous.com

“A tangy and fruity red with chocolate, berry and currant character. Some orange peel. Medium body and a solid core of fruit. Fresh finish. Nicely done for the vintage.” 90pts - Jamessuckling.com, JS and Neil Martin.

Cissac 2016 Haut Medoc Cru Bourgeois
RRP: $87 Offer: $74!

“An expressive and racy wine. 58% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot, 7% Petit Verdot. The beautiful maturity of the different grape varieties as well as very selective harvests have oriented the vinification towards extractions controlled by low temperatures and long macerations. The wines are opulent, rich in well-coated, unctuous and greedy tannins, velvety... A haute couture vintage.” Cissac winemaking team.

90-91 James Suckling.  93 Wine Enthusiast. 16.5 Jancis Robinson.

"This is slightly darker and ripe, full and classic; a bit like the 2019 in style.  It’s almost impossible not to love it’s dark, inky intensity with cassis and plum fruit silky but firm, ripe tannins and lovely persistence. This is a great Cissac that will give 10-15 years plus of great drinking pleasure." - Randall

"Aromas of blueberries, walnuts and rose petals follow through to a medium to full body, round and juicy tannins and a flavorful finish. A blend of 75 per cent cabernet sauvignon, 20 per cent merlot and five per cent petit verdot. Drink in 2022."
91pts - James Suckling

Cissac 2015 Haut Medoc Cru Bourgeois
RRP: $107 Offer: $89!

"Warm spices and hints of mocha on the nose with a wealth of dark, ripe cherries and blackberries. The depth on the palate is impressive. Tannins are boldly stated and carve deep. Very satisfying power here. Try from 2022." 92pts - James Suckling

“68% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot. 2015, the little brother of the 2005.” - Cissac winemaking team.

93 Wine Enthusiast - 16+ Jancis Robinson

This is a little “closed down” compared to the younger wines in this offer. It has lost its youthful exuberant robe yet still is firm and vigorous, a coiled spring. -Randall

"Tasted at the Cru Bourgeois annual tasting, the 2015 Cissac (which curiously I did not taste during en primeur) has a well-defined bouquet with lifted blackberry and undergrowth notes. I would have preferred more intensity but it is charming and precise. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, quite edgy in style with crisp tannins and vivid black, cedar-infused fruit toward the finish. Enjoy this Cissac over the next decade. 2018-2030."
90pts - Neal Martin, The Wine
Advocate

Cissac 2010 Haut Medoc Cru Bourgeois
RRP: $129 Offer: $109!

70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Merlot, 8% Petit Verdot
“This vintage has never ceased to surprise us since its arrival, gradually revealing all its complexity and richness. It offers us a palette of tannins whose coated and fine grins make the difference.” - Cissac winemaking team.

"The 2010 is a classic Bordeaux with hints of cedar wood, red and black fruits, new saddle leather and an attractive, spicy, earthy, character.
The acids seem much sweeter than I remember from some of the vintages from 20 years ago, but the wine is round, generously endowed, well-made and medium-bodied. It should drink nicely for at least a decade." - Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate
At 12 years of age (and aged in the cellars of Cissac until recently) this is a totally benchmark Bordeaux Superior of class and distinction. It is not a crime to drink it now, but it has reserve. It’s quite generous and has an under current of rust / iodine and sweet spice classic Bordeaux character with nice firm, but not aggressive tannins and generous cassis fruit. - Randall

"Dark purple colour with violet hue and black core. Very refined nose with multi-layered approach, ripe dark fruit, blackberries, blackcurrants and black cherries, fine aromatic herbs, discreet spiciness, hints of vanilla and gingerbread. On the palate well balanced with medium weight but very persistent taste, good length, ripe and well structured tannins. A very elegant wine with freshness and promising potential." 91pts - Markus del Monego, MW
-
"The 2021 Cissac offers plenty of black cherries and raspberries on the nose, displaying good concentration and more attack than many of its peers. The palate is medium bodied with firm tannins, good grip and a lightly spiced finish. Drink over the next decade." Neal Martin, vinous.com
