FILM FOR THOUGHT:
(Wednesdays Year-Round & FREE to Members!)
Each week, Charley Walters shares some interesting information surrounding either one of the films coming up at The Dreamland or Dreamland Drive-In, or provides some top notch recommendations on how to beef up your movie pedigree at home. (These films will be available via cable providers, streaming services, and often times, your local library).

AL PACINO

Caricatures usually arise out of truth, and in Al Pacino’s case it’s easy to see how. He’s often represented as an over-caffeinated wild man -- watch his performance in, say, Scarface. But this doesn’t completely describe his talents. A Pacino character will freak out when appropriate but remain poised when necessary. Sometimes one will do both, as in Francis Ford Coppola’s Godfather trilogy.

Pacino has appeared in over 50 films, 20 plays, and six television shows. He’s earned an Oscar (1992’s Scent of a Woman), two Prime Time Emmys (2004’s Angels in America and 2010’s You Don’t Know Jack), and two Tonys, (1969’s Does a Tiger Wear a Necktie? and 1977’s The Basic Training of Pavlo Hummel), and those are only the major awards. As recently as 2020 he was nominated by seemingly everyone for his work in Martin Scorsese’s The Irishman.

Pacino is now 82 and still working, most recently alongside Lady Gaga in last year’s House of Gucci. It’s odd to note that in his early days he also acted with Elsa Lanchester, who had already had a decades-long career when she and Pacino appeared in Me, Natalie in 1967. (That was his film debut, by the way.)

Herewith my Completely Subjective List (and it’s a long one) of my favorite Al Pacino films:

And Justice for All
Carlito’s Way
Dog Day Afternoon
Donnie Brasco
Glengarry Glen Ross
The Godfather
The Godfather Part II
The Godfather Part III
Heat
House of Gucci
The Insider
The Irishman
Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
Scarface
Sea of Love
Serpico
