Last week we travelled with Brussels Airport Company, Fresh Express Belgium, Aviapartner, dnata, Swissport, Ninatrans and Pharma.Aero to the TIACA Air Cargo Forum in Miami.

Many visitors found their way to the Brussels Airport booth for good conversation, great company or a Belgian beer.
Share your BRUcargo pictures with us! Each week we'll pick one and share them in our Gazette.

Free course "Dealing with aggression" by Aviato Academy

Employees need more than ever to be able to deal with verbal aggression, primarily for their own well-being but also from a commercial point of view. Whether it is underlying cultural differences, cross-border behavior or rather an accumulation of frustrations, employees must have the right communication skills to deal with them.

Aviato Academy responds to this challenging reality of the field and is therefore committed to supporting the staff of companies in and around Brussels Airport. It has joined forces with the training and consultancy company Crime Control to develop customised programs that are fully adapted to the context of these target groups.

We would like to invite you to an interactive half-day workshop and demo in Dutch & French  to present these training programmes. Participation is free of charge and limited to 2 persons per company. The demo session will take place on Friday 9 December at Regus (4th floor terminal) from 9 a.m. to 12.30 p.m., followed by a lunch.

Daphné Van Landuyt: Commercial Manager West & Central Africa @ Lufthansa Cargo + docent @ Thomas More
Could you explain more about your function at Lufthansa?
I currently work as commercial manager for the Western and Central region of Africa for Lufthansa Cargo, where I started in 2018. This involves support on pricing, reporting, and marketing inclusive station visits, for which I regularly travel to Western and Central Africa. At Lufthansa Cargo, regions are divided into subregions, I work in the subregion Dakar, but our office is based in Brussels.

What is your background? How did you end up in this position?
I studied Tourism and started after my studies at Aviapartner at the passenger-side. After a few years, I came to the cargo-side, which interested me more. After my experience at the handling agent side, I switched to the agent’s side. About 12 years ago I started working at Brussels Airlines Cargo

You also teach at Thomas More, how did you start here?
During my education, I had a teacher who gave the course ‘Aviation’, and he knew many people at Brussels Airport. This interested me a lot, and that’s when I first had the idea of being a teacher. I thought: If I reach that age, I want to share my knowledge and experience with others. Thanks to an acquaintance I was able to start at Thomas More. Although I love teaching, it is not something I want to do full-time. On top of that, I appreciate my job at Lufthansa Cargo, and I am not ready to give that up.  The balance I have now is perfect for me.
Which courses do you teach? Which part do you love the most? And which part do students dislike the most?
I teach 1 course, Air Freight, to bachelors and graduates who study Air Freight as a specialization and Supply Chain in general. The most important for me as a teacher, is being able to share knowledge and experience. I like explaining the processes and the different types of cargo the most. And I think students dislike the calculations, such as chargeable weights and tariffs.

Do you have any prospects for the upcoming years?
I am happy to have a stable work environment at the moment, but if there were to come any changes or opportunities at Lufthansa Cargo, I would not turn them down. I am very happy to work for Lufthansa Cargo and so I have no intention to change this. Actually, I have run through all air cargo companies: a handling agent, a freight forwarder and an airline. Maybe the only thing that would fit in my career would be working at the airport itself, but this is definitely not something for now.

Recently, with the combination of teaching and working at BRUCargo, I am happy to be more involved in the community again. With my job in Africa, and the head quarters in Frankfurt, I have been away for a long time. It feels good to be back, and this together with the teaching being something totally different from my day-to-day job, gives me a lot of variation which is fun.
