L'ÉQUIPE-CHOC ENGLISH COMMUNITY NEWSLETTER

November 2022
Dear Readers,

There are more and more efforts being made to achieve as inclusive a society as possible. When we take into account the increasing diversity that makes up our educational reality, we realize that we must navigate rougher waters and avoid storms at all costs. The challenges in creating diverse and inclusive classrooms may be significant, but they are not insurmountable.

Diversity takes on many different forms: ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation, socio-economic status, ability, age, religious belief, or political conviction. All these factors work together to teach us how to interact with the world. Diversity expresses itself in so many different ways that it can be daunting to approach it in our classroom. How about taking it slowly and intentionally? And  when we don’t have all the answers, let’s keep the focus on learning and growing. Let’s listen to what others around us are saying, and let’s look for feedback and ways to continuously improve. Change doesn’t happen overnight because everyone’s perspective plays a part in it.

All our best!

Welcoming Gender Diversity in Schools and Classrooms

Moving beyond exceptional situations to support trans students every day
by Dr. Lee Airton

How can teachers welcome gender diversity every day? Lee Airton discusses how to establish classrooms where all of the ways that your students “do gender” are welcomed and expected, where no one is called out for their gender expression, and where no one is told by others that they are not who they are.

Egale

by Egale

Every supportive adult can be a vital resource when supporting Two Spirit, Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans, Queer, and Intersex (2SLGBTQI) youth. Taking on the active role of an affirming adult can be vitally important compared to other lukewarm tolerances 2SLGBTQI youth may encounter. Healthy and affirming conditions must be fostered actively, and in doing so, all youth, regardless of identity, will benefit.
