Dear <<First Name>>,

At the heart of our values is respecting and honouring all people no matter their origin, race, gender, sexuality, colour or age. As a social services agency, we have prioritized a number of initiatives focused on greater inclusivity. In light of this, I want to acknowledge the decision made last week by Vancouver's City Council to adopt the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance's definition of antisemitism which provides the tool to our communities to address the rise in discrimination and hate.  It is these actions that move us closer to building a stronger, safer and tolerant society.

On the programs front, we have kept busy in the community over the past few weeks.  Being and working in the community is a pillar of JFS' objectives, but it’s also an opportunity for us to learn about the changing community needs and gaps in services. Our Food Security team was on location cooking with students from Richmond Jewish Day School (RJDS) for the first time.  We also held a housing event at a local Neighbourhood House where attendees shared their ideas and opinions on the housing crisis, as well as stories of their lived experience.

As we look ahead, I hope you will join me at our upcoming AGM tomorrow. I am also excited to share a number of other programs and public events coming up as we prepare for Hanukkah. Be sure to check them out below and register early, as space is limited.

With warmest regards,

-Tanja Demajo, CEO

Lil’ Chefs in Training

JFS Chef Zoe and staff from our Food Security team hosted the first-ever RJDS Food Lab mini-program.  Grade 4-7 students gained hands-on food skills and learned to prepare a tasty kosher dip to share with classmates. Teachers and administrators were delighted to witness the level of enthusiasm and engagement among the students.

Let’s Talk Housing

In mid-October, we held our JFS Housing event attended by current and past JFS clients at the Mount Pleasant Neighbourhood House.  Presentations from Shelley Rivkin, VP, Local and Global Engagement Jewish Federation of Greater Vancouver and Mara Shnay, housing, food security and disability advocate spoke on the recent housing statistics and stories of lived experiences from Jewish community members.  The event was an important opportunity to have meaningful dialogue on the housing crisis, while also hearing so many great ideas and suggestions from our community on this issue.

This consultative process was our first step in assessing our housing supports and how they align with our community's needs. Stay tuned for more updates over the next few months.

Local artist, Annalee Kornelsen, joined remotely to capture themes, ideas and experiences. View her illustrations HERE.

The Great Latke Bake Off

On December 8, we are hosting another JFS Community Kitchen event, by donation.  This time we will be making latkes together. What makes this unique is that latkes will be baked instead of fried.  You’ll be surprised at how good it is. Batches will be made and sold at the JCC Holiday Market with all funds donated back to JFS.  Don’t worry, all participants will get a take-home package to enjoy at home.
