One Endowment Can Changes Lives
Every endowment has a purpose. Some endowments support nonprofits directly, and some support specific members of our community, through nonprofits.
The Constance G. & Lester W. Sontag Endowment was created in 1992 from a bequest from Lester W. Sontag M.D., who was the Antioch College physician in the 1920s.
Lester gained significant recognition for his discovery of the effects of a pregnant mother's heartbeat on the heartbeat of her unborn child and was appointed to the Fels Longitudinal Study in 1929, which focused on human growth and development. The study was part of the Fels Research Institute at Antioch College. Lester was engaged with this this study, the longest in the world, until his retirement in 1970. Constance G., Lester's wife, was a published author and an avid reader of exploration, the Antarctic, fiction, and poetry.
The Sontag Endowment provides grants that support various needs in the senior community and a special collection at the YS Library:
Local transportation services for the elderly, such as through the YS
Senior Center
Library services for the elderly and other residents of YS and Miami
Township
Capital improvements and/or matching grants for the Friends Care Center and the YS Senior Center, or another organization in YS/MT whose purpose is to provide services to the elderly in YS/MT
A portion of the Sontag Endowment's funds has also supported the Constance G. Sontag shelf of books at the YS Library, as recommended by Suzanne Clauser. Since the late 1980s, books have been purchased for the shelf, with topics including Antarctic exploration, explorers and exploration, writing and writers' groups, literature, poetry, and short stories.
Grants over the years from this endowment have funded in-home-end-of-life care, assistance navigating a Medicare drug program, an improved wheelchair ramp at the YS Library, and Automatic External defibrillators (AEDs) at Friends Care and the YS Senior Center.More recently, grants from this endowment have funded capital improvements at the YS Senior Center, the Senior Center SoupBowl Fundraiser with John Bryan Community Pottery, Local Fare for Local Seniors at the YS Senior Center, and a remodeled fireplace room at the YS Senior Center. This November, the YS Senior Center received a grant that includes Sontag Endowment funds for a new membership and organizational database.
The Foundation is grateful for the care and support that this endowment has provided our community for decades.
