Yoga for Headache - November 2022 

Sleep Yoga

Yoga where you sleep? No crazy poses or positions? Sounds too good to be true!

You heard it right. Sleep yoga, or yoga nidra, is yoga where you simply lie or sit in your most comfortable position and follow guided breathwork, perform a body scan, and sometimes engage in a visualization practice. The goal and objective of yoga nidra is to create new habits of thinking through neuroplasticity (rewiring how our neurons play together). Studies have shown that meditation and yoga nidra literally allow us the opportunity to change our brains. How powerful is that!? Simply by taking 10, 15, maybe 20 minutes or an hour—whatever your schedule allows for and your brain craves—you have the power to put on a yoga nidra meditation to help the way your brain sees your chronic pain, headache, anxiety, stress, depression, insomnia, or anything your brain and body are processing at that time. 

How would you begin this practice, you ask yourself? 

Come join us at Barrow for our complimentary one-hour yoga practice. Mindy Holleran, one of our physical therapists and yoga instructors, typically ends her Tuesday yoga class with 15 minutes of this guided practice. If you are unable to attend class, the Insight Timer app and YouTube are great resources. In your search, simply type in “yoga nidra for anxiety” or whatever you are experiencing at that time, and multiple options should pop up. We are excited to see where this journey takes you!

Please email Yogaforheadache@dignityhealth.org with any questions, or to RSVP for any of the classes listed above. Class size is limited to 10 at this time, and will be on a first come first serve basis. You will be notified upon receipt of your RSVP if you are confirmed, or if you will be placed on a waitlist.

Please note that if we need to cancel a yoga class, you will be notified by email as soon as possible. If the instructor is ill, or if a class needs to be canceled same day, you will receive a cancellation email no later than 3 hours prior to the class start time.
