Academic

Teachers Only Days

The upcoming Teacher Only Days scheduled for Friday 25 and Monday 28 November are allocated in Accord between the Ministry of Education, NZEI Te Riu Roa and PPTA Te Wehengarua. We have selected these days within the timeframe provided, ensuring the least amount of disruption for our students. We can confirm there is no impact on the students completing their NCEA examinations.

Junior Prizegiving

Prizegiving for Years 7 to 10 will be held on Wednesday 30 November at 12.30pm in the College Auditorium. It is likely that the Prizegiving will finish earlier than 3.15pm and boys will then be dismissed for the day. Buses will run at the usual time of 3.15pm. Parents of those boys receiving awards will receive an email invitation next week.

Languages

We are incredibly proud to announce our Year 13 student, Will Murphy, has been crowned the Oceania Champion in the 15th Chinese Bridge Speech Competition for Secondary School students. The competition is open to non-native Chinese-speaking students from around the world, and is considered the “Olympics of Chinese Language.” It attracts students from more than 100 countries each year, and one champion is chosen from each continent. For this remarkable achievement, Will was awarded the title of ‘the Chinese language Ambassador’ and a full scholarship to complete a degree in a university of his choice anywhere in China. Huge congratulations Will!

NCEA Exams

Students have received their exam admission slips. It is important that they check them carefully and see or email Mrs Graham if there are any missing entries. They must bring this slip to each exam. If they forget it they will have to go to the Main Office and have a new one printed which may delay their entry to the exam. Students should check their timetable carefully as we will not be making phone calls if a student does not turn up to an exam. Details regarding exam expectations can be found here.
A reminder that students must wear their normal school uniform to all exams.

Reader Writer Volunteers Morning Tea

As a thank you to all our reader writers and volunteers we have had helping our students through their exams this year, we would like to invite you to a morning tea hosted by Mr Jason Cornford and Mr Patrick Walsh in the Staff Room on Monday5 December at 10am. We look forward to seeing you all.

SHC Google Account

A reminder to all students leaving Sacred Heart in 2022, your SHC Google Account will be deleted at the end of the year - after NCEA exams. This means you will no longer be able to access any content stored in your Google Drive or school email account. Please make sure you have a copy of anything you would like to keep.
You can transfer all of your school Google Account content to a personal Google account using Google Takeout. Follow this link for instructions: https://takeout.google.com/transfer
If you have any issues or questions please email Angela Gamil.

Year 9 Camp

Thursday 1 December to Sunday 4 December
Early next week an email will be sent to parents of students attending camp with final details, including drop-off times, and any other necessary information.
Please if anyone in our community has access to a 2 or 3 ton truck with a tail lift to help transport gear down, please contact Mr Jaaz Samuela.

Pastoral Care

Uniform expectations during exam leave

All students coming into school during study leave and for exams must wear regular school uniform. This means the correct jersey, jacket, shorts, and shoes or sandals - and be well groomed and clean-shaven. It has been disappointing to note the number of students wearing incorrect footwear and in particular Birkenstocks. Please can we ask for your support in this regard and request parents address this issue at home.

Uniform donations

Donations of uniform items that no longer required by your son are always most gratefully received by the Pastoral Care team to support our students and families in need. Please deliver to the Main Office or contact Mrs Kelly Jennings at the Uniform Shop.

Student Drivers

As we approach the holiday season it is timely to remind students of the rules around driving on a restricted licence. Please can we ask parents for support in this regard. Restricted licence conditions | Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency (nzta.govt.nz)

Road Safety and Traffic rules Awareness programme

Sadly approximately 1.3 million people die each year as a result of road traffic crashes. Road traffic injuries are the leading cause of death for children and young adults aged 5-29 years. The main reason behind these road accidents is not following/knowing traffic and road safety rules.
Trafficquiz have developed a free website with the aim to spread awareness regarding traffic rules and road safety rules. School students can learn and test their knowledge about traffic and road safety rules in an entertaining way. Parents can also use these quizzes regularly to refresh their knowledge about traffic, road safety and child safety rules. For more information click here.

Touch Rugby

SHC Year 7 & 8 Touch Squad finished 5th at the Auckland Inter-Zone Championships this week. It was a stunning day at Bruce Pullman Park which saw SHC represented with pride, speed, skill and spirit. We started the day with a 2-2 draw against Northcross Intermediate (eventual winners of the Tournament). Game 2 of the day saw us take on Glen Eden Intermediate, again a very tough and close encounter, we just couldn’t quite get the win, going down 1-2. A big win in Game 3 v Howick Intermediate 8-1 saw some great attack and defence. A win-draw–loss saw us place 3rd in our pool, and the challenge of St Paul’s in the 5th/6th playoff game, resulted in the win 4-2. Thank you for all our players for their outstanding behaviour and commitment to learn and improve. Each school had to provide referees, thanks to Opeti and Mace - you had some very challenging games to officiate, and you both did so at a high level. Great SHC whanau support as always, thank you.

College Information

Health Centre

It is as important as ever, to please keep your sons home if they are unwell with respiratory or gastro symptoms, even if they have a NEG RAT.  We are seeing numbers increasing of unwell students attending school, that require sending home. This is especially imperative if you have a family member at home who is COVID POSITIVE and your son has new respiratory symptoms. We know that a positive test can often be several days after someone is already infectious. It is the symptoms that are more important to take heed of, than a NEG test. We continue to recommend testing while symptomatic and returning to school when well and with NEG testing. We also suggest a GP visit for students who have sore throats for more than 3 days, to rule out bacterial infections.

Learning Support Information Evening

You are invited to an Information Evening for parents of students that learn differently. It will be held in the College Staffroom on Monday, 5 December 5.30pm-6.30pm. This will be an opportunity to learn practical ways to help your son and how to access resources, meet Support Staff, network with other parents, as well as to share information and advice with others. We will have parent and student speakers as well as information about our Library, Career Advisory, School Counsellors, Learning Coaches, Digital Support and Literacy Support. Light refreshments will be served. Please RSVP to msmidt@sacredheart.school.nz

A reminder to parents to please ensure their son(s) medical information is up-to-date through the Parent Portal. Sometimes there may be changes since their enrolment. We rely on this information if a student needs to attend the Health Centre for any reason.
