Remembrance Sunday

‘Come O Christ and reign among us, King of love and Prince of peace’.

Today, on this last Sunday before Advent, we celebrate the festival of Christ the King and we welcome everyone at Christ Church to our Patronal Service.

As we approach Advent we anticipate the coming of the Messiah. The watching and waiting for the Christ Child; the waiting for the second coming of Christ, and the judgement of God. We continue to explore questions about leadership, the use and misuse of power and the search for integrity and truth. We examine the values of this world and the next; the kingdom on earth and the kingdom of heaven; the rule of man and God’s rule.

Throughout the Old Testament there are examples of false prophets and leaders who led the people astray. They are like bad shepherds who have scattered the flock, and have driven them away. Jeremiah 23.2

But we are reminded that Jesus is a different kind of king. He is the servant king. When he rides in triumph into Jerusalem, it is on a donkey and not a war horse; and when he is crowned it is not with a crown of gold, it is with a crown of thorns. Luke 23.37-38

Jesus is the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. John 10.11 Jesus is a servant leader and we are called to follow his example.

May we continue to grow in faith and love, and serve one another in the unity of the spirit in the bond of peace, through the grace of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Celtic Prayers
Praise be to you Lord Jesus Christ;
You were rich, but for our sakes became poor
So that through your poverty our lives may be enriched.
You were strong, but for our sakes became weak
So that through your weakness we may be made strong.
You were light , but for our sakes entered darkness
So that through the darkness you bring us to light ever lasting.
You were life, but for our sakes accepted death
So that through your death we may have life eternal. Amen

Lord, our minds seek to know you,
Our hearts long to find you,
Our souls desire to serve you.
Send us out, aware of your presence,
That our hearts may be renewed,
Our minds refreshed,
Our souls restored,
That we may reveal you to others,
And know you ourselves,
As Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen
