Value Others Week

This week we celebrated Value Others Week at Solefield. On Tuesday we wore odd socks to celebrate our diversity and uniqueness and on Wednesday boys added notes of thanks to our whole school gratitude wall. Thursday was 'pay it forward' day where boys and staff were encouraged to create a ripple effect of wellbeing by doing random acts of kindness all day. On Friday we reflected on the activities during the week and how acts of gratitude and kindness had positively affected our wellbeing.

Dedicated to Mrs Koheji and all the form teachers

During our September staff INSET day, Mrs Koheji introduced the concept of the 'zones of regulation' to Solefield staff in preparation for the year ahead. As we brainstormed ideas for how to contribute to the project, I suggested that the older boys might be able to write a few poems about emotions. So, earlier this term, the Year 7 and 8 boys set about that task, choosing an emotion and writing notes as I asked them a series of questions.

With their answers to these questions, the boys wrote some wonderful poems and have dedicated them to Mrs Koheji and the form teachers with the following message: "This collection of poems is dedicated to Mrs Koheji for always encouraging us to be in touch with our emotions. It is also dedicated to all our form teachers - past and present - for helping us to deal with our day-to-day emotions."

Mrs Koheji was overjoyed when she received the poems on National Poetry Day and has since asked the boys to make illustrations for their poems. You can read a selection of the fantastic poems by accessing the online book here.

Remembrance Day Service

On Friday 11th November, Solefield held a Remembrance Service for our pupils in Year 4 - Year 8, led by our Year 8 pupils. During the service, Year 8 read us 'For the Fallen' by Robert Laurence Binyon, 'We Shall Keep the Faith' by Miona Michael and 'The Soldier' by Rupert Brooke. We then held 2 minutes silence to think about those who have fallen, which was followed by 'The Last Post'. Our pupils made us all very proud, they were respectful and still during the whole service. The Year 8's led a beautiful service and we are very proud of them for doing such a wonderful job in this special time.

Later on in the day, Pre-prep and Year 3 pupils held their own services of Remembrance to mark the special day.

Thank you to all boys, parents and staff for their kind donations to The Royal British Legion. You can watch the service in the link below.

The ‘Mathematics flow’ at Solefield

Mathematics at Solefield is a serious but enjoyable affair. It not only permeates other curriculum subjects (eg. STEM, Science, Geography, PE), it is also integral to the boys’ lives. That is one of the key tenets of learning Mathematics: it is an essential, relevant life skill and Solefield pupils understand that.

The Mathematics curriculum at Solefield has a flow to it, from Pre-Prep all the way up to Year 8. The students’ mathematical journey is well-planned, well-delivered and tailored to each pupil’s needs. While we are mindful of the fact that the boys do take important exams during their time at school, especially in Years 6-8, that is not the main driving force behind our vision. We aspire to produce competent, confident mathematicians with a love of learning who are well-equipped to problem solve. Teachers and TAs support and encourage all learners; consolidating the basics with some students and stretching those who thrive on the challenge. As such, boys are given the responsibility of selecting work that they feel provides them with the level of stretch they need during each lesson. Sometimes they require a helping hand in choosing which work to attempt, but that is all part of the learning process.

Charlie in the movie 'Matilda the Musical'

Our very own Charlie B, 6F appears in the new movie, 'Roald Dahl's Matilda The Musical', which is due to be released in cinemas next Friday 25th November.

This is an absolutely wonderful achievement! Charlie's mother tells us where we can spot Charlie, after they attended the cast and crew screening:

"You can clearly see Charlie in the first 'Miracle' scene. This is the scene when Matilda is a baby. There is a circular cake structure with children dancing round on each layer and adults and babies at the bottom. Charlie is on the top layer of the circular cake structure dancing round, in the school uniform, holding a red balloon and with a red backpack. There is a good close up of Charlie as he releases the balloon. He can also be seen slightly earlier in a bird's eye view looking down but is harder to spot unless you know what you are looking for. Charlie is one of two boys holding a red balloon so makes it easier to find him."

What an experience Charlie. We can't wait to see it!

Year 4 Learning Assembly

Last week, Year 4 kicked off the Solefield Learning Assemblies by showcasing all their work so far this year.  All the boys enthusiastically described what they had been learning in every subject from STEM to Religious Studies to Library.  They spoke French, read poems they had written and shared photos of Science experiments with circuits as well as history trips and workshops.  Parents also viewed the boys' books and enjoyed the premiere of the 4R Wars of the Roses film.

Year 7 Learning Assembly

It was lovely to welcome Year 7 parents into school for the Learning Assembly this week. The boys had worked hard to put together their presentation and were excited to share it with their parents.

All the boys spoke with great enthusiasm about their work across all the subjects that they study. Parents were also treated to Kasten singing the piece, "The first time ever I saw your face" and were tested by being asked to solve a Maths equation and answer Science questions during a little audience participation!

Mrs McClure praised the boys on their "level of sophistication" and commented on "how much they manage to pack into a week"! Well done, Year 7.

Year 4 Sushi Workshop

As part of their Geography work on Japan, Year 4 had the opportunity to make and sample their very own sushi this week. For many of the boys this was a new experience and one which they seemed to enjoy a great deal. Thank you very much to our catering team for cooking the sushi rice for us and for providing all the ingredients for our workshop. The boys experimented with different vegetable fillings including spring onions, cucumber, peppers and avocado and some were brave enough to try the very hot wasabi paste! The final sushi rolls looked very professional and tasted delicious.
Well done, Year 4!

Dinosaur themed Stay & Play

Our Head of Drama, Miss Adams led a fun and engaging 'Dinosaur Island' Stay & Play today for preschoolers and their parents. Children enjoyed storytime, followed by creating a dinosaur island all together with Miss Adams, which kept children fully engaged and occupied playing with friends, while parents and carers could chat over coffee and biscuits.

We are looking forward to a 'special visitor' coming to our next Christmas themed Stay & Play on 2nd December. Parents can book on the link below. Please invite other parents and carers outside the Solefield community, who are very welcome.

Alumni Parent News

Ex Solefield parent and local artist Oliver Barratt is behind the piece of public art installed in Bligh's Sevenoaks.

Mr Barratt featured in the latest "In Shape" Sevenoaks Council Magazine (as pictured), his "bronze sculpture, ‘Three and Four’, is inspired by coppice trees and hop vines that once grew locally. The statue’s verdant green-base is a reference to the green buses that came and went through Blighs when it was a bus station."

* Remember our special Facebook group for old boys', parents, teachers and staff. Please share with any alumni you may know: Click here to join.
