A message from the Pastor...

Advent is a time of preparation. I feel like I've been preparing for this Advent for a long time! After a "normal" 2019 following our arrival at Old Mission, both 2020 and 2021 were...odd. This year we have a full slate of Advent and Christmas activities.
You have shown your commitment to discipleship through some fantastic results from our Pathways to Generosity campaign (don't forget you can still share your estimate of giving for 2023 at oldmission.org/eog).

Now I invite you to continue in your journey by looking for at least one or two activities to participate in or even lead over the next month. Choose from worship options like Blue Christmas, service opportunities like Christmas Caroling (which is also a ton of fun!), and kids activities like the new Kids and Family Christmas on December 22. Don't overdue it - the season can bring enough stress - but do spend some time with your Old Mission family, nurturing and growing in faith.

I hope you’ll join us this Sunday at 8:45 or 10:30 am for worship, in person or online

Peace,

Sympathies
Our sympathy to Melissa Hartwell and her family on the death of her mother.
Giving Tuesday for Youth Missions
Please consider the Youth Mission Trip for #GivingTuesday! If you choose to honor Old Mission with your Giving Tuesday gift, that gift will go toward the Youth Mission Trip in June 2023. The youth will travel to Tulsa, OK to learn more about the Greenwood District and Cherokee History and will serve in those communities. Your gift will help cover the costs for our OM students. Give now or anytime between today and November 29, at oldmission.org/giving.
Coats for The Hub & Gift Cards for CrossLines
This year we will be collecting good, clean used coats for The Hub.  The collection boxes will be in the hallways at Old Mission.

The Crosslines Christmas store is needing gift cards for Walmart or visa/Mastercard in $20.00 amounts this year to give out for clothing purchases.  Gift cards may be left in the office no later than the last Sunday in November. Thank you!  The Missions Team

Advent Study: The Angels of Christmas
starting Monday, Nov. 28 at 7:00 pm

Join Rev. Karen Nyhart for a four week DVD study entitled The Angels of Christmas:  Hearing God’s Voice in Advent, by Susan Robb. We will explore the four angelic visits (Zechariah, Mary, Joseph, and the shepherds) surrounding the birth of Jesus.

This study will be online only via Zoom. Please register here. You can also purchase the book here.

Heifer International
Missions is celebrating the "Year of the Llama" as an opportunity to help Heifer International raise people out of poverty. This is a hand-up, not a hand-out. Missions will be in the Narthex on December 4th, 11th, and the 18th from 9:15 to 11:45. We will have all kinds of llama items and gift cards/catalogs so you can choose a gift for the "person who has everything." This is a gift that will truly make a difference, and will continue to help families year after year all over the world.
Old Mission Christmas Silhouette
This year our wooden Christmas silhouette was replaced with a metal version.
Our thanks to the team in the photo who worked Sunday afternoon setting it up.
Harold Laverentz was instrumental in creating the original silhouette.
Thanks to Paula Laverentz and family for helping make this happen through Harold’s memorial fund.
Nativity Escape Room
Your family is on a mission! You will be taken back to the time of Jesus to solve the mysteries of His birth by decoding the facts…so you may SEE THE LIGHT! You will use ciphers, Morse code, cryptograms, and other puzzles to “unlock” each room.  Some are easy for younger children: others require guidance or wisdom for older counterparts.  The best age range for the Nativity Escape Room is 8 and up.  There will be sticker activity for the younger kids!
Come as a family, with friends, or as an individual and join in the fun as we unlock the 4 mystery rooms. Join us on Sunday, December 4thth from 5 – 7pm.  Sign up at oldmission.org or in the Narthex under the T.V.  Will you be able to unlock all the mysteries of Jesus’ birth?  Let’s find out.  Questions: ask Pastor Debbie 913-262-1040, debbie@oldmission.org

K-2 Fellowship
Mark your calendars! Our annual K-2 Fellowship Night will be on Friday, December 9th, 6:00 – 8:30 pm in Fellowship Hall. We will be watching The Grinch, complete with a pizza dinner and games. Your child is welcome to wear their pajamas and bring a blanket and pillow to this event along with one friend! Parent volunteers are needed. Please RSVP online or sign up at the connect table in the narthex. This event is for kindergarten-second grade kids.
Christmas Caroling

Come caroling with us!  It is one of the sweetest ways to express our mission. We'll meet up Saturday, December 10, 4 pm in the west parking lot of Old Mission. We will divide and sing, visiting church members in the Johnson County area.  All you need is a smile and festive gear – bring family and friends. Join us for hot chocolate and cider afterwards at Steph Rawe’s. Sign up at oldmission.org.

Blue Christmas
Is there an empty chair at dinner this holiday season? Has the weight of life been getting you down lately? Are you dreading the expectation of being cheerful in the Christmas season when you’re just not feeling it?  If you can relate, you are invited to join Pastor Nancy at the Blue Christmas Service, where you can come as you are and experience the peace of Christ in a quieter, reflective candlelight service.  It’s on December 11th at 4:00 p.m. in the Sanctuary. You will leave feeling lighter and more hopeful as you approach the holiday season.
Educational Opportunity Tours
Come join Pastor Karen and her husband, Scott on a trip to Italy through Educational Opportunities.  Explore Rome and visit the Vatican, the Sistine Chapel, St. Peter's Basilica, the tomb of St. Peter, and the Colosseum.  See the home of St. Francis of Assisi, the Leaning Tower of Pisa, the city of Venice and so much more. Contact Pastor Karen for more information at karen@oldmission.org

Food Donations Needed
Old Mission’s food collection for the Roeland Park Food Pantry continues. Recently they have been giving out 160 grocery bags of food on the 1st and 3rd (and 5th if there is one) Fridays of the month, and each family is given a $10 gift card.

Please consider donating pasta, pasta sauce, apple sauce, soups, cereal, canned vegetables, jelly, or honey. You can also choose to donate a $10 Aldi gift card so families can purchase milk, bread and other needed items. Please bring gift cards to the church office and place nonperishables in the large container at the church’s front door. Thank you,

Missions Committee
