A Warm Welcome to All Saints Episcopal Church of the North Shore

All Saints welcomes all people, without exception, to our church. We know that Christ is present in each person here, and we celebrate the diversity of the body of Christ. If this is your first visit, please introduce yourself today, and please visit again sometime. If you’ve been away, welcome back. If you are here every week, it’s always great to see you! We worship in the Anglican tradition, and are a parish in the Episcopal Diocese of Massachusetts, which is part of the Episcopal Church USA. We honor individuals of every age, gender, ethnic heritage, sexual orientation, and religious background. We respect the dignity of every human being.

Land Acknowledgement
For thousands of years, First Nations people walked on this land in Danvers; their relationship with the land is at the center of their lives and spirituality. All Saints is gathered on the traditional territory of the Naumkeag, and we give thanks to them, and acknowledge their stewardship of this land throughout the ages. They followed the seasons, hunted, fished, raised families, grieved for their dead, nourished their living, shared the stories of their ancestors, and considered themselves the caretakers of this place.

Newcomers Welcome
If youre new to All Saints, or just visiting, and we missed you at the door, please accept our warmest welcome. We hope you will experience the power of the Holy Spirit in our worship together. Please greet the Celebrant as you leave. We hope to see you again!  A restroom is located on the left side of the front lobby.
Prelude

Welcome, and an invitation to a moment of silence after the ringing of the bell.

Opening Hymn 450
All Hail the Power of Jesus’ Name, vs. 1-3

Opening Acclamation
Blessed are you, the one, holy and living God
Glory to God forever and forever. AMEN

Collect for Purity
Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit; that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Opening Collect
God be with you
And also with you.

Collect of the Day
Loving God, we thank you for giving us a king unlike any other; for rescuing us from all our false ideas of importance, like power, wealth, mansions, and the glory of armies. By your grace, assist us to get into the true spirit of things, and to show you a worship which fits your sublime humility. For your love’s sake. Amen.

Jeremiah 23:1-6
Woe to the shepherds who destroy and scatter the sheep of my pasture! says the Lord. Therefore thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, concerning the shepherds who shepherd my people: It is you who have scattered my flock, and have driven them away, and you have not attended to them. So I will attend to you for your evil doings, says the Lord. Then I myself will gather the remnant of my flock out of all the lands where I have driven them, and I will bring them back to their fold, and they shall be fruitful and multiply. I will raise up shepherds over them who will shepherd them, and they shall not fear any longer, or be dismayed, nor shall any be missing, says the Lord. The days are surely coming, says the Lord, when I will raise up for David a righteous Branch, and he shall reign as king and deal wisely, and shall execute justice and righteousness in the land. In his days Judah will be saved and Israel will live in safety. And this is the name by which he will be called: "The Lord is our righteousness."

Hear what the Spirit is saying to Gods people.
Thanks be to God.

Pause to reflect on reading.

Psalm 46 (please read together the bolded lines)

God is our refuge and strength,
a very present help in trouble.

Therefore we will not fear, though the earth be moved,
and though the mountains be toppled into the depths of the sea;

Though its waters rage and foam,
and though the mountains tremble at its tumult.

The Lord of hosts is with us;
the God of Jacob is our stronghold.

There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God,
the holy habitation of the Most High.

God is in the midst of her;
she shall not be overthrown;
God shall help her at the break of day.

The nations make much ado, and the kingdoms are shaken;
God has spoken, and the earth shall melt away.

The Lord of hosts is with us;
the God of Jacob is our stronghold.

Come now and look upon the works of the Lord,
what awesome things he has done on earth.

It is he who makes war to cease in all the world;
he breaks the bow, and shatters the spear,
and burns the shields with fire.

"Be still, then, and know that I am God;
I will be exalted among the nations;
I will be exalted in the earth."

The Lord of hosts is with us;
the God of Jacob is our stronghold.

Colossians 1:11-20
May you be made strong with all the strength that comes from his glorious power, and may you be prepared to endure everything with patience, while joyfully giving thanks to the Father, who has enabled you to share in the inheritance of the saints in the light. He has rescued us from the power of darkness and transferred us into the kingdom of his beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins. He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation; for in him all things in heaven and on earth were created, things visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or powers-- all things have been created through him and for him. He himself is before all things, and in him all things hold together. He is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, so that he might come to have first place in everything. For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, and through him God was pleased to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, by making peace through the blood of his cross.

Hear what the Spirit is saying to Gods people. Thanks be to God.

Sequence Hymn 290
Come, Ye Thankful People, Come, vs. 1, 2

The Gospel                                                                                              Luke 23:33-43
The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to Luke.
Glory to you, Lord Christ.

When they came to the place that is called The Skull, they crucified Jesus there with the criminals, one on his right and one on his left. Then Jesus said, "Father, forgive them; for they do not know what they are doing." And they cast lots to divide his clothing. The people stood by, watching Jesus on the cross; but the leaders scoffed at him, saying, "He saved others; let him save himself if he is the Messiah of God, his chosen one!" The soldiers also mocked him, coming up and offering him sour wine, and saying, "If you are the King of the Jews, save yourself!" There was also an inscription over him, "This is the King of the Jews." One of the criminals who were hanged there kept deriding him and saying, "Are you not the Messiah? Save yourself and us!" But the other rebuked him, saying, "Do you not fear God, since you are under the same sentence of condemnation? And we indeed have been condemned justly, for we are getting what we deserve for our deeds, but this man has done nothing wrong." Then he said, "Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom." He replied, "Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in Paradise."

The Gospel of the Lord.
Praise to you, Lord Christ.

Homily                                                                                      The Rev. Marya DeCarlen

Prayers of the People                                                                                 Sue Spencer
Recognizing that our gifts are miracles that enable our ministry, serve our neighbors, and strengthen our community, we gather to offer our intentions, petitions, and thanksgivings to God.

I ask your prayers for the Church, the inspiration and inheritance of our gifts of wealth, works, and wisdom. Pray for Justin, Archbishop of Canterbury; Michael, our Presiding Bishop, Gayle and Alan our Bishops, Marya, Jim and all other ministers in the Church. In our Diocesan cycle of prayer, we pray for the Parishes of the Taunton River Deanery: Bristol Trinity Episcopal Church, North Easton; St. Thomas’ Church, Taunton; Trinity Church, Wrentham; Diocesan Mission Hubs; Episcopal Marriage Encounter; and Cursillo. In our Anglican cycle of prayer, we pray for The Church of the Province of the Indian Ocean.
When we give out of our abundance,
We build on our blessings together.

I ask your prayers for the world, your greatest miracle. May we who inherit this earth be wise stewards of creation, and kind caretakers of all your creatures. I ask your prayers for those who lead our nations, and for the representatives of our local government. May they use the plentiful resources they steward to care for the people of the world.
When we give out of our abundance,
We build on our blessings together.

I ask your prayers for our neighbors and all who need or request our prayers. For those who are marginalized and oppressed; those who are sick, suffering, lonely or isolated,  especially: Joe Maher, Paula and Sam Noyes, Sean Grogan, Bruce and Maureen Murden, Mary Ellen Murphy, Andrew B., Cathy Doyle, Dean Carter, Mary Carney, Mark and Barbara Winkler, Rebecca Hill Larsen, Don McAllister, Judy Donovan, Priscilla Quealy, Ina Jean Wagner, Phyllis, Max Gettings, Piper, Laura and Tess, Paul, Brian O’Donovan, Ann Gentry, Robin, Brayden, Jan Eschanauzier, Katie, Debbie, Paul Rutter, Janet Kelly, Donnie Mailloux, Dexter and Marcia Koopman and Linda Servin. Are there others?
When we give out of our abundance,
We build on our blessings together.

I ask your prayers for those who have died. May they forever gather at your table of plenty, sharing their gifts with love and joy. We remember especially those whose gifts, bequests, and intentions provide inspiration and abundance beyond their lifetimes. Are there others?
When we give out of our abundance,
We build on our blessings together.

We give you thanks for the uncountable miracles and blessings in our lives. We especially pray for those celebrating birthdays this week, including Cathleen Tottey and Caitlin Healy. Are there blessings you would like to offer?
When we give out of our abundance,
We build on our blessings together.

We pray for all who come to the “halls” of All Saints seeking healing from addiction. Look with compassion on all who have lost their health and freedom. Restore the assurance of your unending love and unfailing mercy; remove the fears that disable; strengthen the work of recovery; and to those who care for those suffering from addiction, give patient understanding and persevering love.
When we give out of our abundance,
We build on our blessings together.

Celebrant: May we, too, reach within ourselves to share our gifts with the world, so that our love overflows in a need-filled world. These and all things we ask in the name of Your Son.  Amen.

Confession
We come before God in confession, laying our faults at the feet of Christ.

To you, Christ our King:
We bring our lust for power and set it down before your rejection of power.
We bring our love of money and place it before your willing poverty.
We bring our stubborn pride and set it before your utter humility.
We bring our pay-back mentality and lay it before your mercifulness.
We bring our desire for self-glory and put before your passion for God’s glory.
We bring our inveterate self-interest and rest it before your self-giving.
We bring all our vain wisdom and lay it before the “folly” of your cross.
Most merciful God, please forgive us and enable us to let go of guilt, and to take steps to prevent future debacles. Correct the distortions in our thinking and feeling, and realign our hopes and ambitions to your will. Let us become, in action as well as intention, the brothers and sisters of Christ the King. Amen.

Absolution
Almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us all our sins, through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen us in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep us in eternal life. Amen.

The Passing of the Peace
Christ is here right now making peace among us.
The peace of the Lord be always with you!
And also with you.

Crown Him with Many Crowns

The offertory plate is now brought forward.

Doxology
Praise God, from whom all blessings flow;
Praise Christ, all people here below;
Praise Holy Spirit evermore;
Praise Triune God, whom we adore. Amen.

The Sanctuary Lamp burns in honor of the Blessed Sacrament, and in loving memory of Emmeline Croft Putnam, given by Paula and Sam Noyes. The altar flowers are given to the glory of God, in loving memory of David Symmes, by Melissa West, and in loving memory of David McPherson and Valerie Lee, by Jean McPherson.

Eucharistic Prayer and Agape Meal Prayer
(Agape is the Greek word for love, and it was a love feast of the early Christians. This meal is another way of living out Jesuscommandment to love one another. We give thanks for the invitation to be at our tables, for here we are shown our lives.)

The Lord be with you.
And also with you.

Lift up your hearts.
We lift them to the Lord.

Let us give thanks to God,
It is right to give God thanks and praise.
It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and every-where to give thanks to you, God Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth, through Jesus Christ our Lord. We have all come to this place as a church searching to find the way forward; we look for healing through these restorative rituals of old: agape and Eucharist. It is in the Agape Feast and Eucharist, where adversaries become friends, and friends become neighbors. Approach this love feast and Eucharist as an experience of warmth and sharing, where God’s grace can be experienced in the fellowship with one another and with God, as we remember Christ’s presence on earth and celebrate the spirit of God’s love. Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever speak this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name:

Sanctus:
Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might,
heaven and earth are full of your glory.
Hosanna in the highest.
Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord.
Hosanna in the highest.

We give thanks to you, O God, for the goodness and love which you have made known to us in creation; in the calling of Israel to be your people; in your Word spoken through the prophets; and above all in the Word made flesh, Jesus, your Son. For in these last days you sent him to be incarnate from the Virgin Mary, to be the Savior and Redeemer of the world. In him, you have delivered us from evil, and made us worthy to stand before you. In him, you have brought us out of error into truth, out of sin into righteousness, out of death into life. On the night before he died for us, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, "Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me." After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, "Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me."

Therefore, according to his command, God,
We remember his death, we proclaim his resurrection, we await his coming in glory.
And we offer our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving to you, O Lord of all; presenting to you, from your creation, this bread and this wine.

We pray you, gracious God, to send your Holy Spirit upon these gifts that they may be the Sacrament of the Body of Christ and his Blood of the new Covenant. Unite us to your Son in his sacrifice, that we may be acceptable through him, being sanctified by the Holy Spirit. In the fullness of time, put all things in subjection under your Christ, and bring us to that heavenly country where, with all your saints, we may enter the everlasting heritage of your sons and daughters; through Jesus Christ our Lord, the firstborn of all creation, the head of the Church, and the author of our salvation.

By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty God, now and for ever. Amen.

And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say,
Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy Name,
thy kingdom come,
thy will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those
who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom,
and the power, and the glory,
for ever and ever. Amen.

Alleluia! Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us;
Therefore let us keep the feast. Alleluia!

This is the table not of the church, but of the Lord. It is to be made ready for those who love God and want to love God more. So come if you have followed, come if you have stumbled, come if you have been here often, or if you have never been here before. Come because it is God who invites you. It is one of Gods purposes, that those who want to find God, will find God here.—Adapted from the Iona Community.

(Now each person is invited to take a portion of food and drink, joining with the entire congregation on three platforms in our love feast.)

Prayer of Thanksgiving
Loving God, we give you thanks for restoring us in your image, and nourishing us with spiritual food in the Sacrament of Christ’s Body and Blood. Now send us forth, a people forgiven, healed, renewed, that we may proclaim your love to the world, and continue in the risen life of Christ our Savior. Amen.

Announcements and Alleluia Prayers for Birthdays, Anniversaries and Travel!

Final Blessing
May Christ the King give you the secret of his humble contentment, and the grace to be thankful for whatever this new week brings. Be glad for those who encourage you, be civil to those who offend you, and learn when to speak and when to be silent, when to move into action, and when to be still and pray. Amen
