Ole Johnson Skrien: A Norwegian Immigrant in the 1870s
North Dakota History, Vol. 43.1, Winter 1976

Ole and Kari Skrien were typical of the families who left their homes in Norway for a place where they could advance themselves economically, own land, choose their occupation, and have a voice in government.

The immigrants brought few belongings but many traditions with them, including special foods on religious holidays. They did their best to have lutefisk and lefse at Christmas; Christmas cookies were often fried, such as fattigmon, rosettes, and krumkake. Typical pioneer holiday gifts were a knife for the boys and a doll head for the girls. Oranges were a special treat, highly valued by children.

Swing Your Partner: High-Stepping Recent Museum Acquisitions

Square dancing items are not regularly seen on the list of things that folks offer to donate to the State Historical Society. So when two separate offers were received, a closer look was warranted, and our museum collections now include items from the Belles ‘N Beaux square dance club of Burleigh-Morton counties and from the Squarenaders in the community of Shields.
