Stopping By Woods On A Snowy Evening

Whose woods these are, I think I know.

His house is in the village, though;

He will not see me stopping here

To watch his woods fill up with snow.

My little horse must think it queer

To stop without a farmhouse near

Between the woods and frozen lake

The darkest evening of the year.

He gives his harness bells a shake

To ask if there is some mistake.

The only other sound’s the sweep

Of easy wind and downy flake.

The woods are lovely, dark and deep,

But I have promises to keep,

And miles to go before I sleep,

And miles to go before I sleep.

--Robert Frost

Dear Families,

We are coming up on Thanksgiving, with an all-school assembly on Tuesday, sales of pies and other goodies to raise funds for class activities, and already wintry weather affecting people's drives to school. Visiting with family, preparing and eating festive foods, counting-- and giving thanks for-- our blessings...

The Shepherds' Play that will send us off into the longer vacation in December begins with the words, "Bless, O Lord, the way we tread; Bless our coming and our going." We can expect lots of coming and going over the next week-- whether Over the river and through the woods to Grandmother’s house, or maybe to visit someone else who lives alone and would be ever so grateful for some holiday cheer and company. There are many opportunities to volunteer or donate food, clothing, or cash to support those in need at this time. Maybe your family will participate in a fun run or Turkey Trot to support a worthy cause.

May the light of generosity and friendship show us all the way towards Peace in these troubling times.

With warm regards,

Simon Frishkoff, High school chairperson

Grade 9 Visits the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC
This week, the 9th Grade visited The Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC as a part of their History Through Art main lesson block. Students explored, made detailed observations, and sketches of sculptures and paintings from Ancient Greece to the Renaissance. We were very fortunate to catch the current exhibition of reconstructed polychrome sculptures from Ancient Greece and Roman period. We also stopped in the Egyptian wing, sped-walked through the Medieval section to the Lehman Collection to see a painting by Raphael, and climbed up the Grand Staircase to the European Paintings galleries. It was a very full and fast-paced day!

Picture left to right, Cross Country runners eighth graders Theo Bergquist and Thomas Madey, along with 10th grader Idris Evans capped their exceptional cross country season by participating in the Section 2 Cross Country Championships at Queensbury High School on November 5th. Evans outpaced his time from last year's championship meet by nearly two minutes, while Madey and Bergquist finished the season among the top eight graders throughout the region. Congratulations to our three runners!
Modified Basketball Starts Monday, November 21st
The Hawthorne Valley School modified basketball team starts training Monday from 5:00 - 6:30 at Hudson Middle School.  In accordance with NY State guidelines, modified teams can include student athletes from 7th-9th grade.  HVS will be competing against boys modified teams but we are welcoming 7th and 9th grade girls to join us as well if they are interested. Coaches Charles Tow and Jason Middlebrook will be sharing responsibility for training and development of both the modified and varsity basketball teams this year.  If interested, contact the coaches via email at jasonmiddlebrook9999@gmail.com, Ctowema@yahoo.com or Athletic Director Jim Gibbons at jgibbons@hvrising.com.  Participants must complete a parent/guardian permission slip, and a health form which confirms that the student-athletes have passed a current sports physical.

We hope all our parents will join us in this community-wide effort to make this festival a magical experience for children and families. Please reach out to your Class Reps to find out details about your class’ activity. And, keep your eyes open for emails coming up about volunteering for a shift.

The Music Committee is happy to announce that after recent years of needing to be outdoors, our Winter Concert is once again going to be held inside this year, in the auditorium at Taconic Hills Performing Arts Center!

The festive concert will include performances from all the students in grades 4-12 and will include music from our Choirs, Orchestras and Strings ensembles, with selections by Tchaikovsky, Mendelssohn, Vivaldi, and more.

The evening will serve as an opportunity for families to contribute to The Music Scholarship Fund, which has provided significant support to families at the school for whom the cost of weekly one-on-one music lessons through the school year is a challenge.

Amazing Books and Advent Calendars Now Available at Turose!
Turose has many amazing books on our shelves by Native American authors including “And Grandma Said” by Tom Porter.  Mr. Porter is a Mohawk elder who came and spoke at HVAs 50th celebration.  The book retells stories his grandmother told him.

Advent is coming… We also have lovely advent calendars in stock.  Come in early for best selection!
News from the Girl Scouts
We learned about Orangutans and other primates during the month of October. Our troop 1621 has been inspired to collect bottles and cans to recycle to earn money to adopt our own orangutan!  We are hoping to adopt “Monita” (see her adorable photo above).  We have a collection box in the foyer near Turose if anyone would like to help us collect cans and bottles.

Troop 1008 worked super hard setting up pumpkins and the fire for the Halloween celebration at HVS.  We also went canoeing and are planning a hike and a bike ride soon!
