The Partnership Access Line (PAL) supports primary care providers (doctors, nurse practitioners and physician assistants) with questions about mental health care such as diagnostic clarification, medication adjustment, or treatment planning. PAL is available throughout the state of Wyoming and is funded by the Wyoming Department of Health. The phone consultation is covered by HIPAA, section 45 CFR 164.506, no additional release of patient information is required to consult.

The PAL team consists of child and adolescent psychiatrists affiliated with the University of Washington School of Medicine and Seattle Children’s Hospital to deliver its phone consultation services.

The PAL team is available to any community care provider in Wyoming.

First Approach Skills Training (FAST) Handouts for Primary Care Providers

Nat Jungbluth, Ph.D.
PAL Consultant

As the academic year gains momentum, and as days get shorter, wetter and darker, you may be noting yet another increase in mental health complaints within your pediatric practice. With the increased prevalence of youth mental health concerns and critical shortages in the mental health workforce, you may be feeling uncertain what you will do with the next distressed family that enters your office.

The Partnership Access Line has been working on resources to support primary care practices with brief interventions called First Approach Skills Training (FAST) programs.

As highlighted in last month’s PAL newsletter, the FAST programs are briefer, streamlined versions of longer evidence-based treatments, designed to be delivered in primary care settings by mental health professionals. Free training videos and workbooks for mental health providers can be found at our website: www.seattlechildrens.org/FAST

While some of our resources are designed for mental health providers, we have also created many resources especially for PCPs. Below is an introduction to the key FAST handouts for PCPs, which can all be found on the PCP page of the FAST website.

FAST-Anxiety 2-Page Handout for Caregivers
This handout explains when anxiety is a problem, lists common but unhelpful caregiver reactions, and offers a guide to evidence-based strategies for helping kids overcome their fears.
FAST-Depression 2-Page Handout for Youth and Caregivers
This handout explains what depression is, what can cause it, and how people can get stuck in it. It offers concrete steps youths and caregivers can take to improve their mood and recover.
FAST-Trauma 2-Page Handout for Youth and Caregivers
This handout explains trauma and post-traumatic stress, and it offers concrete steps both youth and caregivers can take in the aftermath of traumatic experiences to support recovery.
FAST-Behavior 2-Page Handout for Caregivers of Kids 4-11 with Disruptive Behavior
This handout describes what contributes to disruptive behavior problems, lists some parent reactions that don’t usually help, and offers several concrete, evidence-based parenting strategies that caregivers can try out.
FAST-Parenting Teens 2-Page Handout for Caregivers of Teens with Challenging Behavior
This handout gives reasons why parenting teens can be so challenging, lists common pitfalls caregivers of teens can fall into, and shares a list of concrete strategies caregivers can try to help things get back on track.
FAST Handout for Teens on Technology Overuse
This handout invites teens to reflect on the reasons they turn to screens, as well as shares common ways that games, devices, apps and websites trick us into over-using them. Teens can build motivation and generate their own strategies for using technology without getting used.
FAST Handout for Caregivers on Establishing Screen Time Limits
This handout explains why child behavior can be so challenging around screen use and walks caregivers through how to establish healthy limits.
FAST Handouts for Kids, Teens and Caregivers on Racial Stress and Trauma
This set of 3 handouts describes how the stresses of racism and discrimination can affect youth mental health and offers strategies for resilience and coping.

You can also direct families to access our FAST Caregiver resource page, where they can explore tools they can use with or without the support of a mental health provider.

While most of these resources do include more information than you will have time to review together in a typical primary care visit, you can ask families to review the handouts on their own after the visit, and potentially have them follow up with you to share how it goes. Many of the handouts include spaces for caregivers to generate ideas and action steps as well.

We hope these handouts will help you empower families with evidence-based strategies for common pediatric mental health concerns.

Our team welcomes your feedback! You can email us at FAST@SeattleChildrens.org.
