  • HHS at COP27: In two major announcements, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) emphasized its efforts to tackle carbon emissions from the healthcare sector. HHS announcements included remarks that more than 100 healthcare organizations have signed the Biden Administration/HHS Health Sector Climate Pledge, and described joint plans to partner with the National Health Service (NHS) of England to, among other goals, align procurement requirements.
     
  • NIH Climate and Health Initiative: In a statement released by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the agency discussed its plan to address the risk to human health posed by climate change. Published in The Lancet, the NIH commentary outlines how "the NIH Climate Change and Health Initiative is uniquely poised to lead and engage with communities and agencies globally to address the health effects associated with climate change."
     
  • Staffing Crisis: New article from Healthcare Dive examines results from a survey of nurses, finding that half have considered leaving the profession. Staffing shortages, need for better work-life balance, mental health issues, and a sense of underappreciation were cited as top reasons for poor morale.

The delegation also described plans to collaborate with the National Health Service (NHS) of England on developing proposals for aligned procurement requirements as part of a larger update on progress and future plans.

Cardinal Health CEO: Inflation, higher costs to persist
Much of the current inflationary environment "is going to be long-lasting and permanent," and labor and transportation costs will remain high for the foreseeable future, Cardinal Health CEO Jason Hollar told analysts. The health care distributor reported fiscal first-quarter profit of $110 million, down from $271 million a year ago, on revenue of $49.6 billion, up from $43.97 billion.
