Next Online Open Meeting

Tuesday Nov. 22nd from 11 AM to 12:30 PM CET

OPEN MEETINGS are open to members and non-members to present ideas, projects and artists at work in rural areas.

THIS MONTH: we welcome THE KOLONIN. A group of artists who live in or around Arvika in Värmland in rural Sweden. THE KOLONIN is based in a former shop open to artistic practice and makes it visible and accessible to the public. KOLONIN organizes local art projects. They intend to contribute to an inspiring cultural environment, for the people of Arvika and for themselves to live and work in. Presented by Helene Karlsson.

We will also welcome Sara Strandby. In 2021 she started the Bystue (The Towns Livingroom) in the rural town Vinderup. The Bystue became a meeting place for inhabitants of all different cultures and backgrounds. Sara organizes creative activities, theatre projects with youngsters, singing evenings, drawing classes. It is also the local library and a museum, The "Artists Close By" are some of the partners. She won a regional price for her initiative!

OPEN MEETINGS are organized monthly. Do you have a co-production idea? Do you want to share information on your project? Do you have any questions? Do you want to sell a production? Are you interested in what others do? The Open Meeting is open for everyone to talk or just listen! Leif Persson and Henk Keizer are contact persons and moderators: info@network-area.eu

After our Community, Arts & Well-Being meeting with other members of AREA on 25th October, we have decided that, upon completion of the survey - soon to be shared -, we will open our meetings in the new year for people to participate in our weekly gatherings to discuss topics concerning Community, arts & well-being and, in general, to support one another in a compassionate and open-hearted way.

An international Village of Culture in 2023 ?

The International Village of Culture was a project by the English National Rural Touring Forum (NRTF). It was a legacy of an unsuccessful bid by the city of Newcastle for the European City of Culture 2008 (it went to Liverpool). Instead, Newcastle created a festival called Culture10. The NRTF proposed several projects to Culture10  to challenge the idea that only cities are places for culture, investment, tourism and ideas.

The International Village of Culture programme included  a conference in the city of Durham (NE England) in April 2009  where delegates from the UK, Europe, South Africa and Canada met to celebrate and discuss art in rural areas. Two international touring commissions were also produced, and 5 bands from Poland, Norway, Denmark,Finland and Estonia also showcased at the conference then toured rural England the following year.

A few AREA members were there! The idea began with an English rural network, but it belongs to everyone who turned up.

We want to celebrate
the Arts in AREA

We are planning an informal online showcase on

December 20th 11am CET

This is an invitation to celebrate and share some of your artistic practice with AREA members. A chance to find new partners, seek inspiration or simply enjoy some art instead of talk. We don't want presentations about your company. Instead, we want to hear your poetry, see your art work, enjoy your dance etc.

Showcase slots will be no more than 10 minutes and you must be able to set up and run your presentation yourself.
