Congrats to Dr. Lafreniere for his recent proposal to the Google.org Impact Challenge on Climate Innovation for a project entitled "Earth is my Home".  The proposal is with a team of researchers from MTU, Michigan State University and Oregon State University.

Social Scientists in Action
  • Check out this story on our sustainability science and environmental and energy policy students participating in the UN COP 27 Climate Change meetings in Egypt this month.
  • Dr. Don Lafreniere and Dr. John Arnold gave an invited lecture to the Industrial Sites, Embodied Carbon and Adaptive Reuse symposium of the Association of Preservation Technology International.  The talk entitled Preservation of the Postindustrial Landscape with Geospatial Technology outlined how our IHA program and Geospatial Research Facility uses a wide range of geospatial technologies to support sustainable adaptive reuse of industrial sites.

  • Panel discussion: Jason Archer (MTU-Humanities), Tan Chen (MTU-Electrical & Computer Engineering), Vinh Nguyen (MTU-Mechanical Engineering-Engineering Mechanics)
  • Robots are radically redefining our conception of the workplace and the nature of work. Three new Michigan Tech faculty members discuss their research on robots at work—work with humans, work with other robots— in a variety of settings including healthcare and manufacturing. What are the opportunities, challenges, and risks of robots in the workforce?

Jobs and Other Opportunities
Undergrad:
  • Dr. Tiwari and Schelly have received funding for a type of fellowship program and are looking to hire two students to work directly with them. The project will assess how public health facilities navigate energy services during disasters. As well as how to ensure they become increasingly resilient to meet community energy services needs during outages. They are excited to bring energy services issues into public health research. 
  • The USDA Forest Service is hiring for a climate resource assistant in Houghton MI. It is an 8 Month Fellowship: Starting February 2023 - September 2023. With virtual or in-person work at the USDA Forest Service Northern Research Station, 410 MacInnes Drive, Houghton, MI.
