Moore Accountancy Update

The last few weeks have been rather full on with 2 key events at Moore Accountancy:

Ning went on maternity leave a little earlier than expected, but we are delighted to say that she gave birth to a healthy boy, Alex.

They are both doing well, and Katie and Sid are taking over all her active files. We are looking for maternity cover, but have not found the right fit as yet, so we will continue to cover her workload until we find a suitable candidate.

Being an ICAEW regulated firm, we had been chosen for a QAD visit (like Ofsted, but for Accountants).  Susie and Sid have spent the last couple of weeks going through all our processes and client files again and ensuring that we continue to work to meet all our regulatory requirements. We hope to get a clean bill report over the next couple of months from them.

CHRISTMAS
We will be closing the office from Thursday 22/12/22 and reopening on Tuesday 03/01/23 so that the team can spend quality time with their families. If we provide Payroll or VAT services, you will receive an email from Poonam confirming deadlines and cut off dates.

OTHER
Moore Accountancy continue with hybrid working, as it works with the team dynamics and their welfare, both mentally and physically.

Emails will continue to be passed to the relevant team member and dealt with as if they were in the office.

If you have missed any of our previous newsletters, then our website has a backlog of them here.

AUTUMN STATEMENT - NOVEMBER 2022

The September mini-budget was reversed by the October Fiscal Announcements, and we are due an Autumn Statement on 17/11/22.

We are hoping that the new Chancellor and Rishi Sunak will have thought carefully about the direction that they wish to go with, so that we can plan and advise clients for the coming tax year.

The yo-yo effect has led to unhappy financial markets and the general public (as well as Accountants), not knowing which way to act.

Our gut feeling is that they will revert to tightening the economy and handouts, and we will of course be updating our blog next week.

WORKERS PAID VIA UMBRELLA COMPANIES

Umbrella companies are commonly used by employment agencies to pay temporary workers. HMRC are aware that some umbrella companies purport to avoid tax and claim to be able to maximise the worker’s take-home pay.

Legitimate umbrella companies employ workers and pay their wages through PAYE.  As an employee of the umbrella company, the worker should have the same employment rights as a regular employee and has a right to a written employment contract. The worker has the right to be paid at least the National Minimum Wage and is entitled to holiday pay.

HMRC have recently updated their guidance which will help temporary staff identify whether the payment arrangements are legitimate, and also sets out their employment rights:
See: Working through an umbrella company - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk)

Some workers operating via umbrella companies may be concerned that they have become embroiled in a tax avoidance scheme. This could be indicated if they get:
  • A separate payment which they are told is not taxable, such as a loan.
  • More money paid into their bank account than is shown on their payslip.
  • A payment from someone other than the umbrella company, which has not been taxed.
  • Asked to sign another agreement in addition to their employment contract. The worker may be responsible for paying the tax underpaid. If they have concerns they should be made aware of HMRC guidance in spotlight 60.

HMRC LATE PAYMENT INTEREST RATES REVISED

The Bank of England Monetary Policy Committee voted on 3 November 2022 to increase the Bank of England base rate to 3% from 2.25%.
HMRC interest rates are linked to the Bank of England base rate.
As a consequence of the change in the base rate, HMRC interest rates for late payment and repayment will increase.
These changes come into effect:
●    14 November 2022 for quarterly instalment payments.
●    22 November 2022 for non-quarterly instalments payments.

THE MENOPAUSE TABOO

The menopause is a natural stage of life and yet it remains a taboo subject in many workplaces.
People experiencing menopausal symptoms require the same support and understanding from their employer as anyone experiencing any ongoing health condition.

Employers need to break the stigma and taboo surrounding the menopause at work and create an inclusive working environment where employees and managers feel confident to discuss any practical adjustments that may be needed.

The Chartered Institute for Personal Development (CIPD) have support materials, guides, webinars and podcasts for professionals and people managers.
You can also get up to date with the key cases on menopause in the workplace and the implications for employers.
