Climate and Urbanization Ministerial and SURGe Initiative
The final preparatory meeting before the launch of SURGe at the Climate and Urbanization Ministerial on 17 Nov took place today. Representatives from UN-Habitat and ICLEI called on LGMA members to support the SURGe initiative by endorsing the initiative, sharing the initiative with others to endorse, and registering to attend the Climate and Urbanization Ministerial. Endorse today

The critical role of cities and subnational governments in shaping and implementing the Global Biodiversity Framework, and the importance of the climate-biodiversity nexus, is increasingly being recognized and acknowledged.
Achieving Energy Security, Independence and Sustainability with Renewables focused Local Action
Kisumu County Government, Kenya, Chinese Taipei, and Brasil shared their perspectives on how they’ve taken steps to move to renewable energy. REN21 and a youth representative from Student Energy gave insight into how cities and regions can move to a just transition through policy changes like the phasing out of fossil fuels or reducing subsidies to fossil fuel companies, or involving young people in advisory councils. New Green Jobs Initiative in São Paulo
São Paulo launched its new green jobs initiative which aims at fostering the transformation of our economy by stimulating the creation of jobs in economic activities that contribute to reducing carbon emissions, improve environmental quality, conserve natural resources, and assist in the productive transition of companies, work environments and markets.

ACWA Fund and Supporting Coalition, ACWA Platform, Launch to Support Water Safety and Management in Africa
Today the World Resources Institute and partners launched the African Cities Water Adaptation Fund (ACWA Fund) with the aim of channeling $5 billion towards urban water resilience solutions in 100 African cities by 2032.

The ACWA Fund, launched at the Race to Resilience 2030 Climate Implementation Lab, and its supporting coalition, the ACWA Platform, launched at the LGMA Multi-Level Action Pavilion during today's Urban Africa in Action session, will enable city leaders to directly access funding and technical support to implement innovative solutions targeting a range of water issues, including integrated governance, watershed management, increasing sanitation services, improved stormwater management and wastewater management.

ICLEI Africa is very proud to be a core partner in the ACWA Platform and Fund.
Council of European Municipalities and Regions and Platforma release joint study on Localizing SDGs
The localisation and territorialisation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are essential to achieve positive effects on the ground, but they have not yet materialised. The documents lists 10 “key points”, to be addressed to the UN, the EU and the national governments negotiating the climate agreement. These include territorial leadership, city diplomacy, decentralised cooperation or the exchange of experiences and good practices as solutions to the fight against climate change.

Yunus Arıkan, Director of Global Advocacy at ICLEI, evaluated the agenda of cities for Iklim Haber after the first week of COP27. He shared the importance of multi-level action across all governments and local stocktakes.
